Kabbalistic Chanukah: The Downloading of Primordial Light

God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. (Genesis 1:3)

The 36 candles in the menorah correspond to the 36 hours that Adam and Eve were bathed in the primordial light of creation. Today, as we light our own lamps, we call for the revelation of the powerful light that is now hidden. (12th century Kabbalist, R. Eliezer of Worms)

The vibes of winter share with us the tender gift of returning to our inner womb where our wisdom resides and our destiny will once again shine bright in divine timing.

Hanukkah, Hanukkah invites us to turn our senses inward to find, cultivate and rededicate our inner sanctuary. Now is the time to empty out the accumulated trash, create a space of openness and acceptance, and cultivate an intimacy with our emotions as the sensory system of our soul. As we become more at peace within, we regain our strength, one candle at a time. The more we support and nourish our inner vessel, Ohr HaGanuz, the more the Primal Light of Creation will be available to us this time of year.

Spiritually, the eight nights of Hanukkah are a cumulative and progressive process by which the light of the menorah grows to reveal the inner light of creation. The total number of Chanukah lights for eight days is 36 (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8). As Rabbi Eliezer wrote, these 36 lamps awaken the same primordial light that illuminated Adam and Eve at the time of their creation, the first 36 hours of their existence. The Talmud teaches: “The Holy Light served for 36 hours…with which Adam Harrison (primitive man) saw from one end of this world to the other”. (Yerushalmi, Brochot 8:5)

The Midrash taught that this intense light needs to be removed from the universe, hidden for some time yet to be achieved. All of this allows duality to exist and the evolution and purpose of the universe to unfold.

We have longed for it, sought it out and pursued it in our prayers, studies and meditations since it was dimmed. However, even in our darkest hours, we have access to the memories generated during the 36 hours that our entire humanity was bathed in this light. “Where is this light going to hide?” Midrash asked. It answers, “In the Torah.” As we immerse ourselves in the truth and wisdom of the Torah, in its inner light, we can experience this primordial light of wisdom, purpose, and creative intent.

The meaning of the number 36 will lead us to a deeper understanding.

God’s name

God’s name in Hebrew is Elo-him (language of Moses)

God’s name in Arabic is Al-lah (language of Muhammad)

God’s name in Aramaic is Elahh (language of Jesus)

They all share a common three-letter root in Hebrew: Alef, Lamed, and Heh. The sum gematria or numerical value of the three letters is 36 (Alef – 1, Lamed – 30, Heh – 5).

Torah

The concept of light (in one form or another) emerges precisely

36 times throughout the Torah (Rokayach).

Moses

Moses spent 36 days explaining the Torah to the Israelites (Seder

Oran Raba 10).

Moses himself was born exactly 36 years after the oppression in Egypt began.

It is said that when Moses was born, the house was filled with light.

It read, “She saw him and thought he was fine”

(Exodus 2:2) It is also written there (in Genesis 1:4): “God saw the light as good” (Talmud; Sota 12a)

Comment above: “She saw him and thought he (he) was fine” – “he” was Ohr HaGanuz – the hidden Light of Creation, as the being who came into this world with Moses. (Sha’arei Leshem, p. 130)

The word used in the Torah to describe the hidden or original light is “tov,” which means “good.” When it first appears in the Torah, the first letter “Tet” of “tov” (good) has a very unusual character. The letter “tet”, like many other letters in the Torah scrolls, has tiny “crowns” extending from them (a hidden language taught by Kabbalists). The letter is unusual in that it has four “crowns” instead of the usual three. According to Kabbalist B’nei Yissachar, when four is multiplied by the number nine (the value of “tet” itself), the total is 36.

Patriarch Isaac

Abraham was a man of integrity, and his life exemplified the value of the hidden light of creation. But when Isaac was born, he was the first person in history to be circumcised on the eighth day. Since the eight represents transcendence, he was infused with all that the eight represents (transcendence), making him eternally above the natural world. That’s why at such a young age he is entitled to see divine beings just like his father. Contrary to folklore, Isaac was only 37 years old when he “sacrificed”. According to mystical tradition, Isaac was so willing and enthusiastic to offer himself as a sacrifice to God that, although no slaughter occurred, Isaac left his body.

This happened when Isaac was 37 years old, because he had reached his spiritual climax at the end of a full 36-year life cycle. According to Midrash, while Isaac didn’t physically die, there was a part of him that transcended even his earthly identity, causing him to be likened to an angel. The scriptures say that he was blinded after Akeidah (binding, sacrifice). What he suffers is not physical blindness, but “blindness” to the garments of this being, especially aspects of duality (which is why he is “blind” to the traits of his own twins, Esau and Jacob). The energy of 36 promotes non-dual awareness because it is the light that primordial man bathed in before his “fall”.

Rachel and Leah

The total time Jacob transitioned in his life journey was 36 years (from when he left home and back with his new family). (Rashi, Bereishit 28:9)

Jacob then meets his soul mate Rachel (the archetype of Free Will), but is tricked into marrying Rachel’s sister Leah (the archetype of Destiny).

The Hebrew name Leah (lamed-aleph-heh) also has the number 36.

These letters are also a rearrangement of the above mentioned names of God (Alef, Lamed, Heh).

According to Kabbalah, Leah is the archetype of unexpected fate in the Bible. She may not be what we choose to happen to us in our lives, she may not even be desirable, but when she is accepted and embraced (Jacob accepts her as part of the family) transformation happens through her . It was through Leah’s influence that the tribe of Israel was born and destiny was fulfilled. It was through Leah that the seed of the Messiah was born (through Judah, the Davidic family, etc.) who would eventually bring humanity into an Ohr HaGanuz, an age when the Hidden Light would be revealed.

Now we come to Rachel, who had only two sons. Her eldest son was Joseph, and her second son was Benjamin. However, Rachel died in Bethlehem at the age of 36 while giving birth to Benjamin. It is at this age that God feels that she has completed her journey in life. Like her grandfather Isaac, legends tell of her absolute willingness to give her life (one incarnation) for a higher cause (in this case, Benjamin).

Historically, Benjamin represented both Jerusalem and the Temple, as they were both built on the land of the Benjamin tribe. It also happens to be the same location (Temple Mount – Mount Moriah) many years before Isaac willingly sacrificed his life.

The Temple Mount in Jerusalem is one of the most powerful energy vortexes in the world.

This is the same location where the miracle of Hanukkah occurred later in history.

Interestingly, Hanukkah is the only Jewish holiday observed in Israel, specifically on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

The Hanukkah story is barely mentioned throughout the Talmud. Less than a page is devoted to it, while other holidays receive full Tractates, an in-depth and detailed review of the holiday. Previous generations of rabbis tried to downplay the Hanukkah story for political reasons, but it’s not going away. Today, it is one of the most popular and beloved Jewish holidays, especially cherished by children and mystics, guardians of the hidden light.

When in history did the story of Hanukkah take place? In the 36th century of the Hebrew calendar.

36 Hidden Saints (Lamed Vav Tzaddikim)

According to tradition, each generation has 36 noble souls who maintain, nurture and guard this hidden light. Those who guard it also remain hidden and humble. These 36 righteous are sparks of hidden light. This kind of light, warmth, and wisdom flow into and permeate the world through their subtle consciousness.

Masters of Kabbalah – Saint Ali (1534-1572)

Rabbi Yitzchak Luria Ashkenazi – ARI – revered as Ari HaKadosh was a lion to him and to all generations in revealing the depths of Kabbalah and its understanding of the entire universe. To this day, no one has come close to his greatness and light in revealing the metaphysics of existence contained in the secrets of the Torah.

For our own sake, Ari remained hidden for most of his life until his maggid, an immaterial guide, announced that it was time for him to reveal himself. When he was only 36 years old, he accepted the task of revealing the hidden. He died about 2.5 years later.

Our world is full of mysteries, and it is during the darkest months of the year that the brightest energy comes in. What was hidden is revealed and its light is accessible to all who wish to participate and be nourished by it.

Hanukkah lights, unlike Shabbat candles, are not to be used for personal entertainment. “These lights are sacred. We cannot use them for pleasure, we can only gaze upon them” (Lite of Hanukkah). Because these Hanukkah lights celebrate raw, untouched light, reminding us of a higher power at work. It is our connection to these higher forces that replaces false perceptions of separation and fear with experiences of oneness, divine help and trust.

In Earth School we are learning and training ourselves to reach a higher level of consciousness. In fact, the Hanukkah lights are holy tentacles that absorb 36 energies. With each passing day of Hanukkah, the light grows stronger. We place lighted candles in front of our windows as a beacon for all passers-by, reminding the world that darkness can indeed be dispelled, darkness can indeed be illuminated, and it is God’s light that ultimately triumphs.

May this coming year be a voyage of new discovery for all of us, may we plunge wholeheartedly into the unknown of evolution, holding the candle of our faith and our shared love for one another.
