Achieve Your Goals Even If You Face A Mountain Of Debt And Your World Is Collapsing Around You!
I recently watched an inspiring BBC TV program about Nick and Leslie Vallance. Their stories teach a lot about how to achieve your goals and dreams even when your world is literally and metaphorically crumbling around you and you have mountains of debt clouding your life.
Nick’s construction business in Surrey has gone bankrupt. Instead of going into their shell, the Vallances opt for adventure and adventure. They decide to move to Spain and convert a 400-year-old Andalusian palace into a boutique hotel and family home, even though they know nothing about running a hotel and speak only a few words of Spanish!
After the business closed down, they also had no income! However, Leslie commented that there is only one chance in life and it needs to be embraced. Vallance’s budget was £250,000. With this money, they want to start over in an attractive place and take on new challenges.
It helps that Nick does have 20 years experience as an architect, but the challenges are still big and will get bigger soon.
They bought the palace and then had to wait four months for permission to start converting it into a hotel. While they waited, their debts piled up. Leslie commented that they should enjoy every day like the Spaniards and not just be bothered by the delay.
A large portion of the building collapsed, removing six rooms from their hotel before the permits could be passed. This may be thanks to the demolition work being done by the neighbors!
Vallance will have to redo all their paperwork and reapply for their permission to transform the palace. They also had to spend more to reinforce the walls shaken by the collapsed palace. At one point they were paying the builder £40,000 a month. Their mountain of debt is growing every day.
Neighbors refused to discuss compensation, so they had to embark on another major task in their lives, which was being in court for years and hoping to get some money back at some point in the future. They realized they couldn’t let this negative track in their lives disrupt their main track – getting the hotel back up and running.
They accepted in advance the fact that they might not get any money back. They also saw a glimmer of hope that people might have lost their lives had the hotel opened before it collapsed.
They have other problems. Money is very tight, especially after their huge setback. Construction costs doubled to £500,000. They need to borrow more money and will take on more debt.
They plan to open the hotel in June so some of the revenue will start coming in and the debt will start to pay off. Nick said he couldn’t think negatively about what would happen if their project failed.
He has to believe they will meet the June deadline, even though they have missed every previous deadline since they arrived in Spain. In the end, they also missed this deadline.
It was clear to Nick that he was taking a big gamble: “I’ve never been one to shy away from a gamble.” Nor was he one to ignore problems. Instead of working hard, he got busy. He didn’t even think about giving up.
Leslie also has a philosophy that every problem has a solution. The boys are not happy at a local Spanish school. The teacher was very angry at them for not listening. “If you don’t know the language, how can you listen?” said a boy.A year later the boys were transferred to an international school where they were happier
The Vallance family stays positive, and after eighteen months of hard work, they feel they are getting closer to their dream. Leslie commented: “We had everything and nothing. My original hotel dream was there. We made it.”
However, they need 50% occupancy throughout the year to break even. They have to learn how to market the hotel successfully. They were excited when they received their first pre-orders from their website. The reservation fee of 90 euros is the first money they have made in two years!
After two long and tiring years, they are proud and excited about their Palace Hotel. They actually enjoy running hotels, even though they’ve never done that kind of work before. The boys, Harry and George, look happy now. They love their school and have made friends. They rarely talk about England.
Since the locals don’t speak English, Lesley’s language skills have improved, and she’s willing to try speaking Spanish even when the local Spaniards seem confused!
They still have huge debts to pay, but thanks to their determination, hope and belief, their situation has improved a lot. Leslie sums up her feelings: “I’m not that scared of life.”
She realizes that having family around is more important than anything else: “It’s good that Nick and the boys are having fun, but I do miss Marks and Spencer and British sausages.”
The interviewer asks, “Have you achieved your dream?”
“It’s close!” Nick said
Money worries and debt can lead to inaction, depression and even suicide. Instead, Leslie and Nick ignore their money concerns and embark on a life of exploration and adventure. They have to step out of their comfort zone and learn new languages, business and marketing skills.
Sometimes their world seems to collapse around them, but they just keep going until they reach solid ground. It took much longer than they expected, but in the end their courage, determination and persistence in the face of enormous challenges helped them achieve their dreams.
Achieving your goals may take longer and cost more than you anticipated. You may also face unexpected and big problems. Things may look worse than when they first started. It may be tempting to give up, but if you keep going and are ready to learn new skills, your dreams can come true.
I hope the adventures of the Vallances in Spain have encouraged you and me to live out our dreams. If your dreams involve making money on the Internet, you’re unlikely to be faced with a debt load like the Vallances’, but if you’re in debt, their story proves that even if your debt is a headache, there’s a solution.
Mountains of debt can be moved if you have the kind of mountain-moving belief that is described in the Bible or the kind of positive attitude that the Vallance family demonstrated. They don’t allow their problems to paralyze them. They just keep working and applying their new skills until the mountains move.
The Bible shows that any of us with a little faith can move mountains and perform miracles, financial or otherwise.
If you, like the Vallances, find yourself facing massive amounts of debt, remember that mountains can move and financial miracles can and do happen all over the world. In the meantime, continue to work steadily toward your goals.
