Robinson Crusoe – Its Universal Popularity

Daniel Defoe was born in 1659 in St Giles’ Church, Cripplegate, London. He is a man of many shades. These different personal qualities are reflected in his literary contributions. He has done many careers in his life. Some of his important masterpieces, such as “The Treatise on Progects” (1698), “A True Born Englishman” (1701), “The Hymn to Pillary” (1703), “The Consolidator” (1705), ” Apparition of Mrs. Veal” (1706), History of the Commonwealth (1708-09), Reasons Against Hanoverian Succession (1712), General History of Trade (1713), Robinson Crusoe (1719) , “Captain Singleton” (1720), “The Mole of Flanders” (1722), “Rexona or the Lucky Mistress” (1724) and other important literary works will be passed down through the ages.

Daniel Defoe picked up his magic pen again at the age of sixty and wrote a three-dimensional novel “Robinson Crusoe” (1719). After Daniel Defoe’s novels were completed, they were widely welcomed by readers and admirers. He was inspired by the real life of Alexander Selkirk to create Robinson Crusoe. Alexander Selkirk also spent five years alone on a deserted island.

However, Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe is still everyone’s favorite novel. Robinson Crusoe stands alongside Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress and Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. Every schoolboy and girl is interested in the story of Robinson Crusoe. It works magic. It appeals to tender hearts. It has a refined taste for irresistible adventure that no one can avoid. Defoe knew that real magic hits the hearts of everyone of any age. This is the popularity and universality of “Robinson Crusoe”.

The protagonist Robinson in the novel “Robinson Crusoe” loves to travel. He disregarded the precious teaching and counsel of his parents. He runs away from home to explore new places and unknown lands. He goes to London. He sailed from London to Guinea with an English captain. But unfortunately, he was captured by Turkish pirates. After two years of servitude, he finally succeeded in freeing himself. But due to bad weather, the ship wrecked and all other members of the ship perished.

Only Robinson survived. He was thrown on a desert island. He thanked fate for keeping him alive. But at the same time he found that in that unknown place, he was the only human being alive. He felt happy, but the sadness was too close to the most wanted happiness. He couldn’t find anyone with whom he could share his thoughts. He has no shelter, no food, no drink, no comfort and no sense of security. But it is in our human nature to make necessary adjustments. Robinson also followed suit.

He slept on a branch for several days. He knew nothing about the island at that time. Gradually, he found that his boat was getting closer to the shore due to the tide. He embarks and carries very important merchandise. He carried food, bread, rice, cheese, wine, dried fruit, barley, wheat, carpentry tools, guns, nails, nails, bedding, clothing, and hundreds of other vital equipment. He found a suitable place where he could build his new, protected sanctuary. He stores everything in his shelter to make it habitable. But soon he changed places and moved to a new place where he found more advantages. He prepared fences around his tent to provide more security.

Now he thanked Almighty God for saving his life and allowing him to live a peaceful life on this island. He reads the Bible. Now he has two parrots and a dog, both brought from a ship. He learns to farm. He learned to make pots and vessels and make them durable. He divides his twenty-four hours among various chores. He really thanked God for saving his life and giving him everything. So far, Robinson has been using nature in his life on the unknown island.

Suddenly one day, he found two canoes and eleven cannibals on the shore. For the first time he felt danger. But Robinson fought the enemy very bravely and saved the lives of innocent people. Some how he found a very reliable and innocent man. He started calling him on Friday. When you pick him up on Friday, he will call him on Friday. Robinson gave him clothes. He taught him to eat well and say “master”, “yes” and “no”. He told him about God and turned him into a good Christian. As an obedient Friday also followed his master. He learned different chores. He regards Robinson as his father. Robinson met a companion on a deserted island. He was relieved by Friday’s company. Both Robinson and Friday bravely battled more cannibals, saving the lives of prisoners. After experiencing all kinds of adventures and excitements, Robinson and Friday left the deserted island together and started a new journey to a new place.

Defoe packaged his novel “Robinson Crusoe” with adventure, excitement, feeling, reflection, morality, cannibalism and loneliness. These are the popular elements of his novels. Defoe made his protagonist Robinson Robinson strong, tenacious, brave, skilled and experienced, so he challenged such an unfriendly environment from the beginning. Defoe very skillfully blends reality and imagination. His imagination is full of reality. The plot of the novel is really convincing. We never felt that it was a work of pure imagination. Defoe’s heroes are both happy and sad. He is very sad because he is alone on an isolated island. On the other hand, he was happy because God saved his life and provided him with all the good facilities on such an island.

Defoe wrote Robinson Crusoe in a very simple and improvised style. His simple style attracts his readers to read more. Simple, lighthearted, impromptu, prosaic, colloquial, full of allegory, charming attitude – these are the best ingredients for the novel Robinson Crusoe to become a novel of all stages of life and worldwide popularity.
