The Rich Idiot (A Sermon on Luke 12:13-21)

Someone in the crowd said to him, “Master, tell my brother to divide the property with me.” But he said to him, “My friend, who made me your judge or arbitrator?” He said to them, “Be careful! Beware of all kinds of covetousness; for a man’s life does not consist in riches.” He told them in a parable, “There was a rich man who had a great land. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do if I have nowhere to store my produce?’ Then he said , “I will do this: I will tear down my barn and build a larger one, where I will store all my grain and my goods. I would say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have enough goods in store for years; relax, eat, drink, be merry. But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life is taken. Whose will be the things you have prepared?” in this way. “ (Luke 12:13-21)

When I first became an active Christian in the early 80’s, that was a popular catchphrase among my peers.I’m sure I have a t-shirt “Jesus is the answer” printed on it. In fact, the slogan became so popular that some others came up with counter-slogans, wearing T-shirts that read: “What’s the question?”

Of course, the generally devout response to this anti-slogan is “Jesus is the answer to all your problems”, but, of course, that’s not true at all. One night I had a stand-up comedian who convinced me it was part of his routine.As he said, if Jesus yes Answers to every question, imagine how boring game shows can get:

When I was young, I never worried about money. I suspect most of us are like that. Why don’t we seem to care so much when we don’t have money? We get old, we get credit cards, we get mortgages, some of us get stock portfolios, and then we hire accountants and brokers to keep us out of trouble,

I’m ashamed to admit that in recent years I’ve had a lot of sleepless nights worrying about money.i used to think that was other People, I’m too spiritual to do this. There have been too many near-broke times now, and I admit it was me too.

Why am I so carefree when I have nothing, but so anxious when I am relatively rich? The answer is simple (in my case anyway). When I was younger, I always knew my dad had my back. He is not here right now.

I think that’s why most of us worry about money.i think it’s just Fear.

I appreciate that for some people, money is power. It’s about personal and social meaning.it’s about being a someone and stand out.

When we look at some of these businessmen who earn huge salaries, and companies that generate millions of dollars in profits but seem to want more and more, this is the same as Safety, yes? It’s something more morbid — a desire for power, maybe a desire to be like God?

That’s not us, is it? At least not most of us, most of the time, or there is a fine line between wanting future security and wanting to replace God?

“Be careful! Beware of all kinds of greed, for a man’s life does not consist in riches.” (Luke 12:15)

GK Chesterton says “Now we can have a good debate about whether Jesus believed in fairies. That would be a question we could have endless speculative discussions about. But there’s no debate about whether Jesus believed in rich people. We’ve had a big Trouble. Too much evidence in the Bible, too many stories. Jesus said too much on the subject.”

This is true, even though we don’t like to admit it. Even the most fundamentalist preachers who insist that we take everything literally when it comes to the Bible somehow don’t take Jesus’ command about money literally either.

“Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Get yourself purses that won’t wear out.” (Luke 12:33) Surely Jesus is not a literal meaning, is it? If he really meant it literally, he’s obviously not talking to me.

The land of the rich is rich in fruit. He thought to himself, “I don’t have a place to store my crops, what should I do?”…”I’ll do this: I’ll tear down my barn and build a bigger one, where I’ll store all my grain and my goods. I would say to my soul, ‘Soul, you have enough goods to store up for years; relax, eat, drink, be merry. But God said to him, ‘You fool! Your life is being claimed. Who will it belong to what you have prepared? (Luke 12:16-20)

Death is such a sobering reality. It helps us put things in perspective. In fact, what amazes me now, having attended hundreds of funerals, is not how people become clear and suddenly see life at a funeral, but how quickly they seem to forget after the funeral and manage to go right back Get on the treadmill!

Finally, let me tell you a story about my own funeral – a simple one I had at Dulwich Hill that has stayed with me.

I can’t recall the deceased’s name now, but what I do remember is that she was one of the greatest circus performers in this country. A former trapeze artist, her performances are the culmination of every performance at one of Australia’s largest circuses.

I was with this amazing woman’s son both before and after the funeral as he told me how, as a boy, he could never see his mom perform.In fact, he says she always ends her routine with a particularly dangerous move (a double-twist triple somersault, or something like that), and she always performs the stunt ‘old fashioned’ (no safety net)!

At that time, the son said, he would always stand outside the tent and listen to the crowd. He would hold his breath when he heard the drums and the crowd gasp, which is when his mom jumped. When (after eternity) he heard the crowd burst into applause, he knew his mom was okay.

She only missed one jump, he told me. She survived, but she never returned to the trapeze after that.

Anyway, what struck me most about this great woman’s funeral was how little her wonderful life in the trapeze was mentioned in family memories during the funeral! It’s as if kids barely remember her incredible athletic accomplishments. They just remember what a wonderful mom she was!

That says it all for me! Of all the things that most fascinate us today when we come to the end of our lives – no one will remember any of them! This may not be entirely true, but for the most part, the sweat and pressure we put in today, with all the professional accomplishments we achieved, the records we set and the degrees we earned – they will probably add in our eulogy A footnote, but I don’t think my friends and family would really care much about these things, let alone my net worth (if I had one).

Rest assured, we all have the same net worth after death. I don’t know the actual value, but a corpse isn’t worth much.

We worry too much about the things that really don’t matter, and the flip side is that we don’t have the resources—whether financial or emotional—to devote to the things that really matter. I know, for me, the trick is to keep reminding myself, I knew that as a kid – my dad has my back, because our Heavenly Father does have our backs.

Seek the kingdom of God first, and all else will fall into place.
