George Freeman: Australian Racing Identity

George David Freeman is a controversial figure in the history of Australian horse racing. Born 22 January 1935 in Annandale, Sydney, he was a bookie and racing commission agent. His father, William David Freeman, left the family when George was young, while his mother remarried a criminal. However, this was short-lived as his stepfather died shortly after. A difficult childhood in a two-bedroom slum pushed George into crime, and he was jailed for the first time at age 12 for stealing.

He was subsequently jailed several times for petty theft. The last time Freeman saw prison officers was in Freemantle, Western Australia, in 1968. During this time, he married divorcee Marcia Bedford in Sydney in 1963. His gang spread to the United States, where he visited using a false passport as a guest of Joe Testa, a member of a crime syndicate with interests in Australia. Their connection continued during Testa’s visits to Sydney in 1969 and 1971.

From 1971, Freeman turned to horse racing as a commission agent and illegal activities as an off-course SP betting operator. Prime Minister Woodward’s drug royal commission endorsed Freeman and was named a leading figure. He survived a gunshot wound to the neck by an unidentified assailant in April 1979. Freeman later remarried Georgina McLoughlin, a 24-year-old orthotist and former actress.

While running an illegal casino, Freeman was regularly charged with murder and battery. One of his most famous horse racing scandals was “Mr. The Digby incident at Canterbury in 1981 cost him nothing. Mr. Digby, owned by Freeman, put in a great performance and came home comfortably at 7 lengths despite running well just two days earlier. However, his only convictions for illegal gambling were in 1983 for a $500 fine and in 1986 for a $5,000 fine. Because of Freeman’s notoriety, Britain imposed an entry ban on him and his wife in 1985.

For the most part, Freeman is a suave, intelligent dresser who rules Sydney’s underworld. He published an autobiography about his life, “George Freeman: An Autobiography,” which is candid about his crime-related life. Freeman died in Caringbah on 20 March 1990 of ill health from asthma and kidney disease and was buried in Waverley Cemetery.
