Film Review: Taara Zameen Par (Like Stars on Earth)
Taara Zameen Par is a 2007 Indian drama film directed and produced by director, producer and actor Aamir Khan. The film has been re-released titled “Like the Stars on Earth” for Disney International viewing. The film tells the life story of Ishaan Awasthi, an 8-year-old with a wild imagination. While he excelled in art, his academic performance was the opposite. His test papers always get red dots. This leads his parents to send him to a boarding school, Tulip School, thinking that Ishaan will cheer himself up and stop being a naughty kid. However, Ishaan’s performance at the Tulip School mirrored his performance at the previous school.
Meanwhile, a new art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh, enters the scene and encounters Ishaan’s struggles in his early life. It annoyed Ishaan when he was ordered to paint whatever they wanted and he didn’t even put a dot on the canvas. He tries to find out what’s wrong with Ishaan and his red mark by looking at Ishaan’s past exam papers, questioning Ishaan’s physically handicapped but bright friend Rajan and other teachers who he thinks Ishaan is one of those mentally handicapped people who have nowhere to go in life, And a visit to Ishaan’s parents’ home. During his visit, he discovered how Ishaan loves to paint and depict Ishaan’s family, Ishaan’s disability. He refers to it as dyslexia – dyslexia in phonological awareness, phonological decoding, processing speed, orthographic coding, auditory short-term memory, language skills/oral comprehension, and/or rapid naming.
On the other hand, Ishaan’s father denied the fact and said that Nikumbh was just making excuses for Ishaan, just like Ishaan made excuses for himself to study. Nikumbh then grabbed a box containing Chinese texts and asked Ishaan’s father to read them. Ishaan’s father said he couldn’t read what was written on it because he didn’t know the letters. Here Nikumbh mocks Ishaan’s father to understand and accept that Ishaan is indeed dyslexic.
The next day, Nikumbh tried to reach out to Ishaan by telling a story that Ishaan nervously thought was his story. Apparently in the movie, Nikumbh says the story is the story of Albert Einstein. Afterwards, Nikumbh went on to cite different celebrities who had dyslexia or learning disabilities but were still forced to do something different. Before sending the kids out, Nikumbh caught Ishaan’s attention, telling him there was one more name he hadn’t mentioned – Ram Shankar Nikumbh – his name. This suggests that Nikumbh also has dyslexia and has experienced what Ishaan is currently experiencing.
Eager to tell everyone, especially Ishaan’s family, that Ishaan should not be treated “differently” or sent to a special school for mentally handicapped children, Nikumbh continued his conversation with the principal of the Tulip school. He persuaded the headmaster to give Ishaan a chance to explore himself, reclaim his imagination in drawing, and let him do the work of improving Ishaan’s problems in reading and writing (literacy) and other academic subjects. After some debate, the principal agreed with Nikumbh after citing Oscar Wilde’s cliché – A sort of Cynic Is a man who knows everything, the value of knowing nothing.
Nikumbh continues to improve Ishaan’s drawing and literacy skills. A few days later, Ishaan’s father visited Nikumbh and told her that his wife was dyslexic. Nikumbh tells his meaning again through his example story from the Solomon Islands – In the Solomon Islands, when tribes need to clear the jungle to make way for fields, they don’t cut down the tree, they just gather around it, insulting the tree, cursing it. Slowly but surely, after a few days, the trees begin to wither.it died by itself. He hinted to Ishaan’s father that what his son needed was care. Ishaan’s father ran away from Nikumbh’s office with near tears in his eyes, and as he left, he noticed that Ishaan had improved a lot. From a distance he saw Ishaan orally reading a notice posted on the school bulletin board. Ishaan’s father ran away with tears of shame.
The penultimate competition – a drawing competition organized by Nikumbh – takes place in the final minutes of the film. Students and even teachers are welcome to enter the competition. Lalita Lajmi, master painter of Nikumbh, came to the scene as a guest judge. Nikumbh looked everywhere for Ishaan but could not find him. Ishaan’s friend Rajan told Nikumbh that he left the hostel even before dawn. After a short wait, Ishaan appeared and Nikumbh quickly approached him with a canvas to paint on. Ishaan moved to a very private place and started painting.
Finishing his drawing, an illustration of a child staring at himself in a pond (Ishaan drew it himself), he went to Nikumbh to show off his drawing. Ishaan went to see Nikumbh’s painting and saw that it was him that Nikumbh had painted on his canvas, he cried with great joy.
The film ends with a brief introduction of Ishaan’s parents checking on Ishaan’s progress at the Tulip School. They found that Ishaan’s literacy skills improved dramatically. Ishaan’s father, still on the verge of denying his lack of care for Ishaan as a father, thanked Nikumbh for everything he had done for his son. At the end of the film, Ishaan runs back to Nikumbh before leaving Tulip School.
advantage of film
The good things about this movie range from the script itself, to the directing and production, to the performances of the actors in the movie. Definitely two thumbs up for this movie. First of all, the script is well written. Appropriate words are used to embellish the background of the film. The film uses various famous names to emphasize the point of the film – Albert Einstein, Thomas Alva Edison, Leonardo da Vinci and Oscar Wilde. It also uses aphorisms and stories to better glorify the film’s purpose – Nikumbh cites Oscar Wilde, headmaster of the Tulip School, on cynicism. Another, he told Ishaan’s father about the Solomon Islands.
The music production is also well done. The musicality of the film is vividly presented along with the perfection of the film. The song’s lyrics fit well with the film’s scenes, especially in the song where children with special needs are likened to “stars on Earth”.
Aamir Khan’s directing and filmmaking deserves a 5-star rating. He thought very much about making scenes that would certainly emphasize the purpose of the film and have an impact on the audience. Most of the scenes in the movie, if not for the funny laughs, bring tears to the eyes of almost all viewers.
In the end, the great success of this movie is due to its actors. The secondary characters in the story, especially Ishaan’s parents, are excellent. Ishaan’s father, Mr. Awasthi, does a good job of portraying a father character who is rude and disrespectful to Ishaan. Ishaan’s mother, Mrs. Awasthi, also plays the role of a mother well, caring deeply for Ishaan despite his mischievous nature as an eight year old boy. On the other hand, Darsheel who played the role of Ishaan Awasthi was excellent. In truth, Darsheel is an ordinary kid, very different from Ishaan, but in the movie, he appears to be a playful, playful, special needs kid. The way Darsheel behaves, from the look in his eyes when he speaks of a neglected or uncaring child, to his behavior that only a child with a mental disability could see, deserves a round of applause.
Aamir Khan, who also serves as the film’s director and producer, also lived up to the film’s huge success. There is no doubt that Aamir Khan is versatile as an actor, looking back at the numerous works he has created. Like Darsheel, Aamir Khan shows how a formerly dyslexic teacher should respond to the needs of a child with special needs. As the teacher of Ishaan (played by Darsheel), his lines are excellent enough to emphasize his point. Like Darsheel, his eyes give the film something to hold the viewer’s gaze.
Overall, this movie is excellent, from the production and of course the performances of the actors.
If there are weaknesses in a movie, not many people would even say that those flaws matter or affect the making of the movie. On the other hand, for film critics, the film lacks at least one flaw. This is where the other characters in the film shine. Given that the main characters are Ishaan and Nikumbh, the development of the movie should not focus on them.
Definitely two thumbs up for this movie. It lives up to its title, “Every Child Is Special.” This is not just a kids movie. Instead, it’s a movie for everyone, especially teachers who clearly have an obligation to work with students with special needs. The movie also allegorically pricks the hearts of those who judge children with special needs and dismiss them as “apathetic”. This movie gives mentally handicapped children like Ishaan the hope that they can be treated like normal children with proper and adequate care.
The film should also highlight the other characters involved in developing the outcome of events in the film.
