The Chicago Visitation of 1913
The prophets of old cried, “Oh, that you would tear the heavens and come down!” This cry has been echoed through the generations of those who long for the presence of the living God to appear. Throughout the history of the church, God has split the heavens and intervened for His people.
The Chicago Visitation of 1913 was one such era. It was one of the most powerful divine presences this city has ever experienced.
Beginning July 2, 1913, noted missionary Maria Woodworth-Etter was invited to hold a series of meetings at the Stone Church at 37th Street and Indiana. Posters were put up throughout the city to promote the meeting. These services will continue until the end of July. This is the time of divine appointment for the City of Chicago; God descends from the beginning! ! Scenes from the early church age began to appear in stone churches. News of miraculous healings, deliverance from demonic possession, conversions, and outpourings of the Holy Spirit that occurred at these gatherings began to spread throughout Chicago. No more ads!
Incredible healing has been reported. A woman who had been blind for 15 years and had never seen her child was healed instantly. A paralyzed man, whose joints had become rigid and unable to move any limbs or his head, had to be spoon-fed, could barely speak, and was prayed to. For eight years he suffered in this impotent prison. Sister Woodworth-Etter commands him to rise and walk, in the name of Jesus. The power of God came upon him. He jumped out of the wheelchair and ran down the church isle and down the street for half a block. Many followed him out, waving their hats in the air and shouting, “Long live for Jesus.” He ran back to the church, praising God loudly. A young woman who was totally deaf in one ear and also deaf in the second came to pray. She recovered immediately. During a singing service, four crippled people were healed and began to walk without canes or crutches.
News of God’s miraculous intervention spread throughout the city. Thousands of people arrive here by barrow, trolley and train, while many walk. Some come from hundreds of miles away. Between 1,200 and 1,500 people packed into the stone church every night. The basement is full and many people are standing in the street. Street meetings were held to accommodate them. Three services were held on Sunday. No services are scheduled on Saturday so that ministers can have the day off. Some, however, came on Saturdays and Christians met them and prayed for them. A crippled woman, not knowing that there was no service on Saturday, came by tram. She got out of the car and limped down the street toward the church. A German woman met her at church and told there were no services scheduled for Saturday. However, she invited disabled women into church and she and others would pray for her. As soon as the woman entered the church, she was immediately healed. A father travels from Oklahoma with his two daughters. Cannot use her limbs, nor can she speak. The other was born deaf and dumb. Both recovered immediately. One of the girls cried and laughed as she heard singing for the first time in her life.
God tore the heavens and descended on Chicago. Thousands were healed, incredible miracles took place; many were saved, thousands were filled with the Holy Spirit. What was supposed to be a one-month meeting lasted six months. The Woodworth-Etter nuns and lay people dug a deep well of revival.
Chicago Visitation has several distinguishing features:
1. The success of the work is not due to the preaching of deep theological teachings and disagreements. Instead, the gospel is presented in its simple form. People are fascinated by manifestations of God’s presence and power.
2. There is great unity among Christians. Denominational lines disappeared. Christians from various backgrounds joined the work. There is great harmony among believers. Controversy was not tolerated and did not arise. This is a “conflict-free zone”.
3. Worship is in its purest form. Entertainment and obvious displays of talent are absent. Music, singing and praise are only for the glory of God.
4. The whole body of Christ is involved in ministry. There is no laying on of hands prescribed by the preacher or pastor. People serve each other.
5. The preachers and members of all denominations were baptized with the Holy Spirit.
6. On the last night of the six-month long meeting, a prophetic word was given.
As Christians prayed around the altar, Sister Woodworth-Etter and others gave powerful prophecies and divine promises for the future:
“We haven’t reached the consummation of the previous rain, and when the latter rain comes, it will be far greater than anything we have ever seen!”
Frank Bartleman, chronicler of the Azusa Street Awakening in 1907, wrote: “In order to understand what God will do, we must understand what He has done.” We urgently need to study and understand these “revived old wells” “. We need to understand the divine dynamics of these actions of God. We need to know the promises God has made in the past that affect us in our day. God has a way of reminding his people of this promise. In 1999, before I knew anything about the Chicago Visitation of 1913, I had a dream. In the dream, I was standing in the basement of a stone church with a small group of believers. A pastor friend of mine asked us to form a circle and offer “pure praise and worship” to God. I looked around and saw many rooms filled with hospital beds. People with various diseases and infirmities lay in these beds. They were taken care of by an elderly head nurse. As we began to worship and praise God, the nurses left the patients and came to join in the worship. As the worship continued, I saw all the sick people rise from their beds. They were healed immediately and came to worship! I wake up from a dream. Now, ten years later, I understand the meaning of the dream. The same thing that happened at the 1913 visitation will happen again. Pure worship and praise ascend to God. The blind can see, the deaf can hear, the lame can walk, and the dumb can speak. Healing and miracles will once again flow through this great city. God is going to reopen this “ancient well of revival” in Chicago! Why, because he promised that he would and would far exceed the 1913 skyfall!
What is our responsibility in reopening this old well of revival? 2 Chronicles 7:14 gives us the guidance we need, “If this people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and heal their land.” It is time to confess to God, to confess our evil ways and to repent.as joshua
Say to the Israelites the day before crossing the Jordan into the Promised Land, “Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” We will follow this instruction well!
