The Parable of the Groom’s Attendants – Matthew 9:14-15
When someone asked Jesus why he didn’t fast like John and the disciples of the Pharisees, this was Jesus’ answer.
John’s disciples came to him and asked him, “Why do we and the Pharisees often fast, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus said to them, “Should the bridegroom’s friends mourn when the bridegroom is with them? What? But the day will come when the bridegroom will leave them, and they will fast. No one will wear clothes that have not shrunk. Cloth on old clothes, because the patches come off the clothes, and the tears are worse. And they will not pack wine In old wineskins, otherwise the wineskins would burst, and the wine would spill, and the wineskins would be ruined. But they put new wine in new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
The Pharisees and John were acting under the law of the Old Testament. They were acting according to the Old Testament law, and part of that law was fasting; it was a religious obligation as a way of being loyal to God and showing your obedience and obedience to God. You want to follow him, and you fast to allow religious practice to have a greater impact on your prayers and to show that you are more religious.
Jesus answered them by saying imagine a wedding dinner where the groom and his friends are fasting? The bridegroom does not tell his attendants to fast in times of rejoicing. What Jesus was trying to say, if you understand another parable about how a king marries his son. He was trying to point out to his audience that he was going to marry the son of his bride, and all the disciples, when they were going to be his disciples, how they were going to be his bride. But people’s problem is that Jesus spoke in parables, but everything he said was not understood. Even today, these fables remain a mystery to many, which is why this book was born.
May people today think of fasting as a way of putting God’s arm behind your back, like putting pressure on God if your prayers aren’t being answered and you really want your prayers to be answered. You should fast for 3 days or 20 days and make sure God answers your prayers. This is also a religious method of fasting, just like how people in the Old Testament behaved.
James says good and perfect gifts come from the Father of Lights, if you want something good and perfect and good for you, the Father will not deny you. Going into a state of fasting is not going to push the hand of the Father for you in modern times. Likewise, in the Old Testament, fasting has no effect. They treated fasting as a presumptuous form of religion, which Jesus did not accept. He knows who he is. He is the Son of God, and He didn’t need to do anything to impress the Father; in fact, everything Jesus said and did from sunrise to sunset was the will of the Father. He did exactly the will of his father perfectly. He didn’t need fasting to impress his father; he never met him, he never did a thing wrong. Therefore, fasting is not required.
Jesus didn’t need to impress his father even before he started these public ministries after he came out of John’s baptism. It dropped and landed on his shoulders. God said from heaven, “Behold, my Son in whom I am well pleased.” Jesus didn’t even do any public ministry, and the Father was happy.
I think applying this to business today is that we don’t have to do anything special to impress God. God has moved; he is impressed by the blood of Jesus Christ. The cross of Jesus Christ, his Son, and the covenant of blood shed on the cross opened the way for us. God’s law and condemnation of our due has been crucified on Jesus Christ. All our sins were crucified on that cross.
John’s disciples tried to fit Jesus into the Old Testament, and Jesus got nowhere. He is expressing the New Testament. Now, it’s hard to understand that I didn’t start to understand until September 2010 because I dictated this video, but the real New Testament didn’t really take shape until the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Many words of Jesus Christ, many commandments of Jesus Christ are actually more difficult to fulfill in the scarlet letters in your Bible, similar to the Lord of the Old Testament.
Jesus is talking about the covenant he brought, the new wine that is poured out is his blood, the new wine that is poured out, the new wine of grace, the old wineskins won’t hold it. It just doesn’t fit. An old wineskin is an old wineskin, which should be used to hold old wine, not new wine, or it will burst.
If you try to live under the New Covenant, but still be bound by the Ten Commandments and the Law, you’re in big trouble. You don’t even have to try to keep the 10 commandments to bind the old law and try to put new wine into old wineskins. Laws can be as simple as:
you have to go to church;
You cannot forsake the meetings of the brethren;
You must pray for half an hour every day;
You must read the Bible every day.
You don’t have to keep the Old Testament law to be legally bound and self righteous. If you try to mix your own form of law with grace, then the New and Old Testaments weren’t made to mix together, it won’t work. It’s like putting a new cloth over old jeans; it will tear the old jeans. This is the unshrunk cloth Jesus was talking about.
The mixing of the New Testament with the Old Testament is just a recipe for disaster. I was living with that blame and guilt and shame and it was so heavy on my shoulders and I was so depressed. I thought I was going to hell because I fell into some form of habitual crime.
It wasn’t until I listened to some teaching that the law was past and we were no longer judged by it, as a believer in the new covenant, that I was able to get rid of my habitual offender.Until I am sure that my past, present and future sins are forgiven, I will not be able to escape the shame and condemnation of the law
Are you like me? Have you mixed up a little law and grace? Are you like John saying Jesus’ way is too easy? Is grace too easy for you? Do you have to repent? Is there a form of sacrifice that you must make to be worthy of God? Do you fast some TV time? Do you fast some foods? Are you doing things for God by fasting some time in front of your kids and your family, or are you busy serving God and doing things in a self righteous way? Are you one of John’s apostles?
Trying to remain forgiven and free by Jesus while also believing that you have to satisfy the impossible demands of the law is like mixing a bitter drink with a sweet one. If you mix bitters with rum, everything will taste bitter. The law was enacted, and it was meant to be bitter. The law is to tell us that we need Jesus, and then when we accept Jesus, we should obey the leading of the Holy Spirit, not the law.
If you try to keep the law, it’s like putting bitters in old wineskins, they’ll burst. Jesus said you can’t mix the old covenant with the new covenant. If you try to do this, you will forever feel the weight of sin in your life.
Are you like the Pharisees, or one of the disciples of Jesus, very happy to spend time with Jesus, very happy to be forgiven, righteous, loved, holy, blessed, sitting in heaven and doing nothing? Can you bear to go to heaven without doing anything? Or do you have to work it out yourself?
I think this teaching can be shared many times without being understood. I’ve lived with the personal torment, the personal fear of legalism for years, and I certainly don’t want any of you to go through that. I encourage you to watch all the videos on parables that I teach here because I believe the Lord, through the Holy Spirit and Jesus, has given me very divine insight into them.
God bless!
