White Man’s Religion? NOT Christianity!

Christianity: The White Man’s Religion?

Martin Luther King Jr. called Sunday “the most segregated day in America.”

A truer word has never been spoken.

I was preaching a few years ago, Lord help me, and I started with, “Look around. What do you see? I see a church full of white people.” Blacks, Hispanics, Asians and others… They’ve all been there, but our net has holes and we haven’t been able to keep them. Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is like a net for all kinds of fish…” (Matthew 13:47) which includes black, brown, red, yellow, Protestants and Catholics, young , old, male and female.

As Americans, we often exhibit an imperialist attitude that the rest of the world loathes. Regarding American Christians, I often hear and read about third world pastors saying how much they wish they had money raised by Americans to go on their “missionary journeys” so they could take better care of their families and The congregation … buys Bibles and study aids, attends seminary. Can we even imagine a group of half-naked hominids entering our churches to share God’s latest “revelation” to their tribe? Yet, for these short-term missionary experiences that “change lives” (whose life?), we spend a fortune across the pond. Don’t get me wrong, I believe in missions, especially those designed to help the sick and children, but I’ve heard too many stories from missionaries who admit they don’t feel like they make any difference on mission trips, while nationals think that it could have been replaced by a healthy sacrifice of love.

I once taught a Sunday school class in a room of mostly black African priests, their small stature lost in their oversized, dated suits and ties. Between them, their congregations ranged from 40,000 people. These humble people are taking notes, asking questions, paying attention to my every word. I don’t know about them, but for me, that changed my life! God bless those who are wise enough to fly these African pastors to America so they can come home and teach those they are related to (keyword).

With regard to the so-called “white religion”, there are indeed people who mistakenly believe that Christianity is the religion of white people, just as others think that Islam is the religion of black people. Folks, Hosea 4:6 declares, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” Let’s work hard to know the truth, because the Bible says, “They will know the truth, and the truth will set you free,”( John 8:32). I am sure that what you are about to read will be very freeing.

The truth about our ancestors

Black Christianity didn’t start with slaves in America converting to their master’s religion. Genesis 10 shows us where all races originated. Black ancestry is represented by family, language, place and country. The Bible tells us in Genesis that every human being begins with Adam and Eve. everyone! Genesis 2:7 tells us that Adam was created from the ground. It has been scientifically proven that we are all made of the same materials found on Earth. The Hebrew word for Adam is Adahm, which means “red” or “from the red earth”.

Yes, Adam is a person of color!

After the flood, Noah and his children inhabited the earth (Acts 17:26; Genesis 9:18,19). The names of his sons were Ham, Shem, and Japheth. The names mean black, dim, and light, or “fair,” respectively. Biblical historians agree that Ham was the ancestor of the black races—Mongols, Egyptians, Ethiopians, Canaanites, and Indians. Shem was of Jewish, Arab, and Persian descent. Greeks, Caucasians, Russians and Indo-Europeans all came from Japheth.

A third of black sons? Well, we don’t know exactly how dark the other two pigments are, but, is it possible? With God, all things are possible. Let’s face it, if you were the supreme creator, wouldn’t you be creative in creating people and animals?

Look around. Look in the mirror…God is very creative. Medical research tells us that it is possible to have children with very different skin tones, especially if one or both parents are dark-skinned, but it is unlikely that a fair person will have a dark-skinned child. So for Noah to have a “black” son, he or his wife had to be black as well.

Logically speaking.

Ham the son of Noah, the ancestor of the Africans and Negroes, had four boys…Cush, Mizraim, Putt, and Canaan, Genesis 10:6. Cush was the ancestor of the Ethiopians (Genesis 2:13; 10:6) and peoples living in Asia and Africa. Cush means “black” and Ethiopian means “one with a sunburned face”. Jeremiah 13:23 says, “Can the Ethiopian change his skin…?”

Messiah is the ancestor of the Egyptians, and his name means “son of the sun”. Eventually, they even came to worship it, but that’s another story. Ham is derived from the Egyptian name “Kam”, the strongest word in Egyptian for “black”. The Psalms call Egypt “Ham” (Ps. 78:51; 105:23, 26. 27; 106:21, 22). Phut was the father of the Libyan nation (Ezekiel 27:10; 38:5; Jeremiah 46:9 and Nahum 3:9). Libya also means “black”.

Ham’s youngest son was Canaan, who was cursed by Noah in Genesis 9:20-26. While we’ve all heard of Ethiopia, Egypt, and Libya, it’s strange that there is no Canaan today. NOTE: Contrary to what some people teach, not the entire black race is cursed for the sins of the Canaanites, only the Canaanites. They were the original inhabitants of Israel (1 Chr 4:40), but no longer exist. God, how could they be blessed! Yes, sin has long-term consequences, even affecting our descendants.

The sons of Noah migrated around the world: the people of Japheth to modern Europe, and the children of Shem to the Middle East. The descendants of Ham went to southern Arabia, Africa and India. Cush had a son named Nimrod (Genesis 10:10), who built the Tower of Babel, near the Tigris and Euphrates, along with Eli, Akkad, and Gani, the beginning of all civilization (Genesis 10:10; 11:1).

Descendants of Cush established mighty Assyria, builder of Nineveh.

The Bible does not record Phut’s genealogy.

The descendants of Ham include Menelik, a descendant of Queen Sheba and King Solomon, and Ethiopians trace their historical roots back to Menelik.

Joseph married an Egyptian woman (Genesis 41:50-52), so his sons Manasseh and Ephraim must have Hammet (black) blood.

Jethro was an Ethiopian who was converted to Judaism by the testimony of Moses (Exodus 18:1-12).

Moses also married an Ethiopian woman (Numbers 12:1). is she black It could have been! In Numbers 12, Miriam and Aaron turned against Moses because his wife was a Cushite (Ethiopian) and showed contempt for her ancestors. This angered the Lord, and Miriam became leprosy (interestingly, this disease not only made Miriam an outcast from society, but her skin became very white due to the disease. Poetic justice? After Moses pleaded for her, God healed her and sent her back to camp). Note: I think Miriam’s real problem is not Moses’ wife but his gift of prophecy and his special relationship with God. Maybe she chose the obvious (Miriam’s complexion) over being humble and admitting to Moses how much she envied him.

The Bible does not prohibit Jews from marrying Cushites (Ethiopians), and they seem to be on good terms with them (Amos 9:7; Psalm 68:31; Zeph 3:10; Isaiah 11:11).

Jehudi was the secretary of the royal palace in the time of Jeremiah and was a descendant of Cushi (Jeremiah 36:14,21,23), as was the prophet Zephaniah.

Both Joshua and David’s grandmother Rahab the Canaanite were descended from Ham. Bath-sheba means “daughter of Sheba”. Sheba listed in Ham’s family register, Genesis 7.

Bathsheba was married to Uriah the Hittite, whose roots can be traced back to Ham’s grandson Hittite (Genesis 10:15). King Solomon’s complexion and hair are described as black but beautiful (Song of Solomon 5:10,11).

Back in New Testament times, scholars believe that the wise men (there are only three in the Bible) who sought out the baby Jesus were Ethiopians because of the abundance of gold, frankincense and myrrh in southern Arabia and East Africa.

The Ethiopian eunuch in Acts 8:26-39 undoubtedly brought Christianity to Ethiopia.

Simon the Canaanite is considered the black apostle (Matthew 10:4).

Simon the Cyreneian who helped Jesus carry the cross may be a descendant of Ham, because the Cyreneites were in North Africa.

Apollos (Acts 18:24) also comes from Ham. Of course, at Pentecost (Acts 2) with the establishment of the church, the peoples from Ham were there as well.

Simeon, or Nigel, and Lucius of Cyrene were leaders of the Antioch church (Acts 13:1). The people in these areas are all black. These men ordained and commissioned the great apostle Paul.

Jesus: People of Many Colors

Jesus was of mixed race. You heard that right…Jesus was of mixed race! Our Lord is a colored man! Although he was primarily Semitic, of the five women mentioned in his genealogy, Tama, Rahab, Ruth, Bath-sheba, and Mary, the first four were descended from Noah’s Black son Ham (Matthew 1:1-16).

Let’s face it folks, man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). It’s okay if you’re green with orange spots! He wasn’t looking for skin color or physical features. He wasn’t interested in what we looked like, how we talked, or where we lived. He doesn’t care how religious we are or how beautiful our churches are. He doesn’t care how we dress, drive or what sect we claim to be.

You see, when our Savior was born, there was no room in the inn, and now he is looking into our hearts, regardless of the color of our skin, to see if there is room there for him to reign as Lord in every life.

Regardless of the color of our skin, the question we must answer is: Are we available?
