It’s an easy thing for me to think twice before you use a drug. I used to use drugs regularly for about 4 years. I started smoking marijuana and ended up cracking and doing heroin and meth. My story is not about how I let myself down, how I became homeless or how I destroyed my brain. At one point, I thought I had a stroke while doing a speedball with meth and a special K. I’ve managed to get my brain function back, and I’ve managed to get on with my life in a somewhat normal way.

I’m a 31 year old man, fairly successful at work, as successful as I really want to be. I have 2 beautiful kids and a baby on the way. My wife is amazing…most of the time…if you are married you know it’s normal. I love my wife very much and she loves me too. I have a great house in the suburbs and we go on two great family vacations a year. So, if my life is so perfect, why am I telling you to think twice before taking drugs?

On the outside, my life is perfect, but I live with a dark secret that I wish to erase every day. I used to be a big brother. No, that’s not a dark secret I’m hiding. The secret is that I’m a bad influence on my brother. I didn’t stand up for what I thought was right and steer him in the right direction. I really didn’t lead him at all. I’m just a kid, I tell myself. I didn’t understand the decisions I had to make, not just for myself, but for those who looked up to me.

Instead of leading, I follow. I let my brother lead me down the path of destruction. I not only follow, but encourage and support. Somehow, I now manage to escape the same consequences my brother ended up facing. My consequences are different.

I had to live with the fact that my brother killed himself every single day of my life. I had to accept the fact that I did nothing to prevent the chain of events that ultimately led to his death. I certainly had no idea that what we were doing back then would end the way they did, but is that really an excuse?

We all took major hardcore drugs together and omg they were fun. You know what’s going to be fun right now? have a brother! have my best friend! We’ve always dreamed of raising our kids together, going on family vacations together, and moving into the next phase of our lives together.

Every time I paint the walls at home by myself, every time I go on a family vacation, a trip to the zoo, anytime he’s there to help me or enjoy life with me I wish I could go back and stand up and be what a big brother should be; good influence and protector. Every time I get excited for a second, I pay back and have my brother back in my life.

Some of you may have met someone close like a brother in your life. This is great for you. This story is for you too. You are an influence on someone’s life. You are leading someone. You are setting an example.

Think twice before taking drugs, because you probably won’t be harming yourself. You might kill your brother; you might kill your best friend.
