Which leopard gecko supplies you want to purchase is entirely at your discretion. You can provide your gecko with a simple cage that meets the minimum requirements for a good habitat, but you can also house your gecko in a luxurious custom-made cage that is equipped with beautiful decorations to pamper your gecko. It’s really up to you.
If you don’t have any budget constraints, you can buy all the new supplies you need at a pet store. But you can get these supplies cheaper by using old or unused items such as old aquariums, shoe boxes, or Tupperware buckets. With a little creativity and tinkering, you can make these things work satisfactorily and look beautiful too.
However, you should be aware of the basic supplies needed to meet the minimum requirements for keeping and maintaining a healthy gecko. Here is the list:
Animal terrarium/water tank/cage/pen– Comfortable volume is one 10 gallon tank or a minimum size of 24″X12″X12″ per adult gecko. If you want to keep multiple geckos and plan to keep them, you may need a pair of 15 gallon tanks and two pairs of 20 gallon tank for breeding your geckos.
wire mesh or sieve top– This is usually contained in a cage which should be made of wire mesh to allow for good ventilation and plenty of light.
Gecko Security Substrate– The substrate should be a non-irritating and non-abrasive material such as artificial grass, newspaper and paper towels
suitcase, wet box– The hide box is where the gecko spends most of its time. You will need 2 hidden boxes. Place one on the wet and hot side, above where you would place the heater under the tank, and the other box on the dry and cool side of the tank. The damp or wet box is the third hidden box with some peat moss on it to keep the humidity in.
rough decoration– This is the inside of the tank, including climbing rocks or logs, wood or bark that can be used to rub gecko skin and artificial plants when shedding them. Live and non-toxic plants are also good for creating a humid environment. Make sure these climbing accessories are securely attached to the bottom of the tank to keep the gecko from rolling over.
Thermometers and Thermostats– Two thermometers are required to monitor the temperature on both sides of the temperature gradient and a thermostat is used to control the desired temperature. Different temperature gradients need to be provided to allow your gecko to choose the desired body temperature.
Lamp and timer, overhead light and black or red reptile bulb – These are the supplies to provide proper lighting for your gecko. If you can place your gecko tank in a location with plenty of natural light, you don’t need this kind of artificial lighting. If labor is required, set the timer for 12 hours on and 12 hours off.
plate or bowl– These are necessary to place water, mealworms and calcium powder. Choose the right size and depth.The water bowl should be easy for the gecko to soak and drink without drowning
Under tank heater or UTH– This is an additional heat source placed under one side of the tank. Suggested temperature settings are 80 – 85F during the day and around 70F at night.
spray bottle wetting box– This is just a sprayer bottle, just for spraying the wet tank, not necessarily spraying the whole tank
food– A common food reserve for geckos is live mealworms. Other foods that can be prepared are crickets, cockroaches and silkworms.Remember to feed all this live food into the gut 24 hours before feeding the gecko to ensure the lizard’s health
tonic– Sprinkle powdered calcium and vitamin D3 on the live food before feeding it to the gecko.
So, here are the basic supplies for caring for a leopard gecko. Again, those supplies aren’t expensive brand new. As a beginner, it’s best to start with something simple and inexpensive. The estimated cost to provide you with a nice and natural looking cage with all these basic supplies is about $100 to $150.
