You guessed it, exactly 10:22 am. What is the magic of eating during a job interview? Great question, few job seekers have a clue. High unemployment rates in nearly all job categories create a formidable interviewing challenge for employers. When, where and how long should we spend with potential candidates?
Seasoned interviewers love to chat while eating, and for good reason. It seems like a great idea and a free meal for job seekers. Why not the usual response. Of course, you name the location, brunch is fine, early or late, it doesn’t matter. [Yes, I know it’s GRITS but only a native southerner would understand]
Wondering why it’s so obvious to professionals? He started having brunch with candidates while letting a few simple questions surface, impromptu, one of those simple questions that anyone could answer with their mouth full. Don’t hit a big burp, or you’ll be screwed before you even get to visit the office, factory, or company car.
Apologizing in a bad situation never hurts, but it’s better not to screw up an important interview. Did you eat with your mouth shut?no gum in the ashtray [the good old days when everybody smoked or got choked trying]. Smoking, chewing, or spitting during an interview isn’t cool for men or women, or ever was a better idea.
Few of us are qualified multitasking geniuses, but some think it’s possible. Everyone is a stalker, researchers tell us. Driving, texting, and putting on eyeshadow are just silly things, not multitasking. Statistics tell us that driving while talking on the phone is equivalent to drinking and driving. Ignorance is not happiness or blessing. Do not do this.
Interviewers are sometimes well trained to spot losers faster than bullets can find their targets. Having brunch with candidates saves time for interviewers. So much business success is based on social skills and market connections. Your dress code, your interactions with your servers, and your courtesy to other guests are all signs of who you are. The interviewer is definitely taking careful notes.
Unless you pass the brunch eating test, it’s time to shake hands and leave. All the brains, brawn, and tough guy images are useless in 99% of careers or basic jobs. In a situation of high unemployment, it gives your interviewers the ace card to weed out the losers. Downturns allow employers to fire losers, their least productive workers, without bad feelings or accusations of bias against a particular group.
Most of us like the occasional economic slowdown, but not the tsunami the world has felt over the past year.Business is tough to say the least and profits have turned red [loss]. Signs are emerging ~ going out of business ~ going bankrupt ~ selling equipment. 30% ~ 50% ~ and more price reduction ads are rarely accepted. Funds are scarce and there are no buyers. We all look forward to great savings or no deals.
Consumers are the backbone of our economy, and now they fear instead of spending. Fear has taken hold of our free spirits, keeping American and world markets buoyant. Auto dealerships have a flood of new cars, but sales are down by double digits. Consumers drive their older cars longer, eat out less, wear their clothes for one more season, and live in their homes for another decade, hoping to beat foreclosures before value returns.
Life lessons are being learned the hard way. Recently, I read the story of a young college graduate who lost his first 9 jobs and then found a mentor who helped him become a very successful business executive and spend the next 25 Earned millions of dollars over the years.
What changed him was an interesting revelation about the book of Proverbs. For two years, for 30 days each month, he read a chapter of Proverbs, then started over on the 1st of the following month. Our challenge is to be the best. Business leaders need great employees. You can count on interviewers to find qualified employees to hire.
