Henna Can Be Wonderful, If You Know How to Use It!

About three years ago, on one of the many hair sites and forums I belong to, I stumbled upon a henna thread. As I read it, I noticed how many wonderful things women were saying about their henna results, like stronger, manageable, and overall healthier hair. Of course, I just had to try it. I clicked on one of the links and was directed to one of the most comprehensive henna websites ever created. The site showcases the chemical composition of henna, provides different types of henna from different corners of the world, pictures of henna-dyed hair, numerous henna-related definitions, and more. I sat on this site for hours doing research before buying a lot of products!

The henna was delivered very fast and of course I was very excited to try it. Even though I had the recipe memorized with a “t”, I turned on the site so that I was 100% sure I was doing it the way the site instructed. I poured the henna into a plastic bowl and slowly added lemon juice to the mixture while stirring constantly. Finally, once the mixture has a yogurt-like consistency, I cover the bowl with plastic wrap and leave it in a warm place for 24 hours.

The next day, I noticed that the mix was slightly orange like they say and smelled very earthy. I love the smell because it makes me feel like I’m getting ready to do something so wonderful and healthy for my hair. Following the directions on the website, I added more lemon juice to the mixture and started applying it to my freshly washed hair. My hair has been divided into 6 or 8 puffs, so I just remove one puff at a time and apply the mixture section by section. It’s easy, but very messy. I then cover my hair with Saran Wrap and plan to keep it on for the full 4 hours recommended on the website.

By the second hour, I had to go to the bathroom. I did my usual “ritual” and then when I woke up, I noticed that my urine was bright green! I read a lot on that site, but no one warned me that my urine might turn green. Of course I was terrified. I quickly washed the henna out of my hair and googled “green urine/henna”. I see this is actually a common, harmless side effect that some people experience because of the way their body processes the henna. I was relieved when I read about this on a couple of sites, but when I touched my hair, I was totally shocked!

To say my hair feels like a Brillo Pad is an understatement; it feels more like barbed wire. Where exactly are all these benefits I’m supposed to experience? Where are the women on the forums conspiring to destroy my beautiful natural hair? I followed the instructions so perfectly that I fully expected to have new, softer, more manageable shiny hair. I deep conditioned it and moisturized it to death; still dry as a bone! Do I have to cut the hair I’ve finally learned to love and struggled with for almost two years to grow back? Over the next few months, my hair slowly returned to normal. I’m so grateful, I vowed never to touch henna again.

Then about two years later I was hooked on another henna line and these women couldn’t stop talking about how they loved henna and the wonderful results they received. I went into the Henna Challenge forum and there were pictures of such beautiful hair. ok, what happened? I wanted that hair so badly that I posted my experience on the forums to see if I could get some feedback. I was quickly told that I had made a huge mistake; the formula was not for African American hair. The formula I use has way too much acid and doesn’t add any moisturizing properties to balance out the drying effects of the acid. Am I brave enough to try again? The pictures in the forum left me with no choice!

This time I used apple cider vinegar as it has much lower acidity than lemon juice and the acv is great for conditioning the scalp. I also learned that I used too much acid, so this time I only used enough acid to moisten the henna, then pour in spring water and aloe juice to saturate it to a yogurt-like consistency. After letting it sit for 24 hours, I added plain yogurt, raw honey and a very moisturizing oil blend, and a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar. This time I made sure I used a sulfate free shampoo and a super moisturizing deep conditioner. All other steps remain the same. After 3 hours of treatment, I rinsed my hair and finally, I experienced all the troubles. My scrunchies are actually looser, my hair feels stronger and it’s as soft as a big old cloud! I joined the challenge to get a henna treatment every two weeks. It’s a lot of work, but my hair is thanking me every time I go to brush it.

Eventually my pee stopped turning green and I went to a treatment every six weeks and then stopped it all for a while. It’s hard to find 4 hours dedicated to it, not including the 5 hours actually doing the hair. I have now started using henna every six weeks and I have even given my 7 year old daughter a few treatments and she loves it.
