Today, ordinary soldiers find it difficult to motivate themselves when they serve their country because they don’t get the appreciation they really deserve. Also, the meager salaries they get push them into crimes like espionage for other countries that pay huge sums of money to get sensitive information from them.

Another outstanding issue is the sharp increase in shootings in recent years. In the past two weeks, four soldiers have been killed by their own countrymen in Kashmir alone. In addition, the recent suicide of a female soldier also shows that some urgent reforms are needed within the army to maintain the integrity and harmony within the army.

The first issue to be addressed is to provide them with adequate financial and other benefits. Although, the military does get necessities at very low prices, it also needs the facilities that ordinary citizens get in other ways. For example, increasing the number of schools and universities, especially around villages where most of the troops come from. To further clarify my point, military children must receive a good education to ensure they grow up to be worthy of the pride of their well-deserved fathers.

The second is to teach the army a variety of skills. Most members of the military join at an early age, and many of them may have been denied the education they wanted to complete. Therefore, every soldier must regularly attend short courses in various fields in order to broaden their mental capabilities and improve their skills.

The military is always full of great leaders who lead their battalions by example. Such exemplary behavior should be more common in the military these days. A group, team, or battalion leader must care about his subordinates—whether it be their personal problems or their professional needs. By extending their loving hands, the pressure within the military can be greatly reduced, and people can see soldiers standing tall and proud to guard the country’s borders.

I’m only 24 years old and I’ve never been to the border in my life. However, seeing my dear military friends crumble under the pressure brought tears from my heart.
