Where Two Murderers of Emmett Till ‘Spent the Night’

Back in August 1955, the Delta family in nearby Rulesville was visited shortly after by the two men who brutally murdered young Chicagoan Emmet Till.

An elderly woman, who asked not to be named, now a resident of Drew, Sunflower County, less than five miles from the plantation where Till was killed, remembers that summer night when she was 17, her parents had JW Milam and Roy Bryant entered their home. Bryant was her mother’s in-laws. Both were noisy and tense, she recalls.

Recently, Mrs. “Brown” visited with one of Drew’s black restaurateurs and told him she felt it was important to share her story with him and others in the black community.

“Finally the right time has come,” she told the restaurateur.

“My parents didn’t tell me what happened at the time. JW has a brother, Bud, and I’m pretty sure he was with them too. I was in bed, but I could hear them.”[1]

Years later, her father confessed to the Drew woman that Milam and Bryant told him what they had done to Emmett Till.

“They knew the law was looking for them. They also said that Caroline Bryant was with them when they killed Emmett Till. I don’t know when Bud joined them. I think they chased after Fuck him. He’s a better man than his brother and I don’t think he’s going to kill people — I hope not.”

She woke up at sunrise that morning and all three men had left her home. “I never knew what happened to them after they left our house. I think they knew the law would come after them. And I think they felt safe because most of the police were covering them anyway. I don’t know if they Turn yourself in and let yourself be found, or be taken in by the Sheriff and charged.

“I still can’t believe how they put our family in such danger; there was so much unrest after Emmett Till was killed. Drew’s people – black and white – threatened to kill each other’s entire family . Some threatened to kill family members who were as many as ten people in return.”[2]

Although her parents hid Emmett Till’s killers and never turned them in, Ms Drew denies their involvement.

“I know my parents would never cover for them. Those people came to our house and sat there all night. My parents later told me what happened. But I never want anyone to think that our family helped got them.”

According to Mrs. Brown, “the majority of white people in Drew and Rouwell feel the same way”.

“After the trial, the only support Milam and Bryant got was from the Ku Klux Klan because they were Klan members. Most people wanted nothing to do with them; they killed a 14-year-old after all. Maybe ’” They didn’t mean to, but they did kill him. “

On August 24, 1955, 14-year-old Thiel whistled to a white woman in a grocery store in Monee, Mississippi, a small cotton village in the Delta. Emmett Till, a teenager from Chicago, didn’t realize he had broken the unwritten law of Jim Crow in the South until three days later when two white men dragged him from his bed in the middle of the night in brutal beat him violently and then shot him in the head.

Although Thiel’s killers were arrested and charged with murder, they were quickly acquitted by an all-white, all-male jury. Shortly after, the defendants sold their story to a reporter, including a detailed account of how they murdered Thiel.

The murder and trial shocked the nation and the world, and Thiel’s death was the spark that helped mobilize the civil rights movement. The city of Montgomery began a bus boycott three months after Rosa Parks’ body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River after she refused to ride in the back of a city bus. Parks later told the young man’s mother how she was influenced by Till’s murder to take a personal stand.

The failure of the federal government to intervene in the Tiel case has made blacks and whites realize that if change is to be made, they must do it themselves. Some historians describe the murder of young Emmett Till as the real spark that ignited widespread support for the movement.

He also claimed that Milam and Bryant’s other brother, Leslie Milam (now deceased), were involved in the crime,” write David T.
