But it wasn’t until the advent of psychoneuroimmunology — the study of how emotions affect the central nervous system and immune system — that scientists began to realize that “all for one” meant that “everything” had profound physiological effects on “one.” In the 1940s, when researchers first documented the “marriage dividend” in terms of health, they speculated about how a stable family life could contribute to health and longevity.
