The only thing I can recommend about movies and books is to elevate the material to a level that is valuable to you. Orwell may have been writing an anti-communist manifesto, but it’s more interesting to think of 19:84 as a struggle between man and incarceration. Apocalypse Now is about more than Vietnam, How to Succeed in Advertising is about more than rampant commercialism, etc.

::: American Beauty

“I feel like I’ve been in a coma in the past

I’m including American Beauty mainly because of what’s wrong with it. Leicester’s big death/rebirth transition shows promise, but is he transitioning to what? Falling behind to teenage crap, not progress in any sense. Returns based on fear. Stupid cars, stupid drugs, stupid vanity, stupid skirt chases. There’s no redemption at all when Lester sees his own goofiness near the end or is voiced over by the snappy/sly dead man.

The presence of the semi-mysterious neighbor kid and the video clip of his windblown bag redeems the film slightly:

::: Apocalypse Now

“In a war, there are many moments of compassion and tender action. There are many moments of ruthless action – often called ruthless – and in many cases it may just be clarity, seeing clearly what to do and going straight to Do, quickly, wake up and watch it.”

You might think that the director’s cut of Apocalypse Now Redux is the one to watch, but everything that was correctly cut from the original has been incorrectly replaced. (Brings an interesting point that directors and writers often don’t understand the higher applications of the stories they’re telling.) Stick with the original on Redux and Conrad’s Heart of Darkness.

Apocalypse Now is about horror. A journey of discovery, into the heart of darkness, to this terrifying place. What’s so scary? how did you get there Why would anyone undertake such a journey? Should you be doing this trip? Why or why not?

Note the powerful epiphany that drives the film. The First Assassin’s Letters Home, (“Sell the House, Sell the Car, Sell the Kids…”), Dennis Hopper’s Youthful Vigor, Kurtz’s Diamond Bullets, Willard’s “…  ..I’m not even in their army anymore.”

“Spring, summer, fall, winter…and then spring again.”

A lovely movie ruined by a stupid water walking stunt. Without this nonsense, the audience would be free to think, decide, and think. Instead, the movie pulls itself on edge with its clever little silly twists. When Chauncey hits the stop button as he straightens the sapling before a devastating finale, it’s a fun, endearing film.

::: Blade Runner

“I’ve seen things you people won’t believe. Assault ships are on fire on Orion’s shoulders. I’ve seen c-beams glow in the darkness near Tannhauser Gate. All of these moments will pass like tears with time. Next It’s raining. It’s time to die.”

What makes this movie unique is that it’s as good as the book, an incredibly intimate depiction of the captive/captive, Maya/man relationship. Compare this to Moby-Dick or One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, both excellent books but useless movies.

As with Moby Dick, Hollywood castrated the book. They stripped it of its archetypal dimension and reduced it to a pointless pissing contest between McMurphy and Nurse Ratched. Great entertainment, but for meaningful insights read this book.

Razor’s edge makes it fun. See Larry teetering on the delicate line between what he was and who he is becoming. He walks on the edge of two lives. Bill Murray’s version is a bit out of focus… stick with Tyrone Power or read the book.

::: Vanilla Sky/Abre Los Ojos

“Open your eyes.”

If you like Vanilla Sky, check out the original Spanish film Abre Los Ojos (Open Your Eyes). For our purposes, these two films are probably the best; the closest to a fable of enlightenment.

Of course, the interesting thing about enlightenment is getting there, not being there, and that’s what these movies are about; waking up from a false reality, opening your eyes. They are not so much real as they are unreal.

This is a story about a journey to get anywhere, even jumping from a tall building, is better than continuing to live a lie, even a beautiful, happy one.

Notice the presence of a true guru, explain clearly why jumping off a building is the best thing to do, and wait patiently for it to complete.
