Shooting Tips From Pros

Sports action skeet shooting

The shooters, hiding behind the shutters and shaded by trees, stood silently in the open field. From 80 yards overhead, it falls almost in front of you. You will see an orange disc briefly before pulling the trigger. Skeet and trap shooting sprung from the woods to newbies of all trades, creating the part-time shooter. Another addiction was born. Tracking a clay target just 5 inches in diameter is as challenging as it is fun, sending company executives out of the boardroom and into the field. Even golfers can trade in their 7-irons for long-barreled Beretta automatic rifles.

“Pull!” Sandy Mize ordered. A few seconds later, about 40 yards away, a clay pigeon crosses from right to left. She followed its path with her fingers before it dropped onto the berm. “Pull.” This time, her Beretta gun was neatly tucked into her shoulder, her cheekbones resting on the butt, her eyes trailing her muzzle a few inches to the left, and she buckled. The trigger was pulled. She scratched the back of the Frisbee.

“Keep your eyes on the target, and when your eyes reach the line of sight, the target is there. Then pull the trigger,” national shooting champion Bill McGuire advises Mize.

McGuire appears about every six months at “The Willows” in Tunica, Mississippi, offering expert tips and techniques to both novice and seasoned shooters.

According to hunting guide and NSCA Level 3 instructor Mike Mize, “The key to good shotgun shooting is letting the subconscious mind calculate lead and gun speed. After you choose your stance and method of holding the gun, let the conscious mind do one thing. …which is focusing on the target as clearly as possible. This allows your eyes to provide your subconscious brain with the speed, distance and angle of the target.”

Baseball is a good example. If you’re at bat and a pitcher pitches to you, you don’t have time to consciously calculate that the ball is traveling at 87 mph and will hit home plate a little high and tight in about 0.50 seconds. All you can do is focus on the ball and trust your instincts. You also don’t look at the bat, it’s just in your subconscious or indistinct, but you see the ball clearly.

“In shotgun shooting, the barrel is your bat. Some people say they can’t see the barrel at all. I think we all see it subconsciously or vaguely. But the most important thing is that you see clearly goals,” Mize said.

After shooting for a while, you’re sure to hear the familiar words “you stopped swinging the gun.” The natural reaction is to push the gun at the last second to avoid the gun from stopping and create follow-through. That’s definitely the wrong approach. Stopping to swing the gun is almost always due to trying to see the lead. That is trying to consciously see the distance between your barrel and the target. To do this, you have to turn your attention from the target to the barrel. You’ve taken your eyes off the moving object (the target) and turned your attention to the stationary object (the barrel). This will stop or slow down the swing of the shotgun. An example of this is if I tell you to point (with your finger) to a bus that is driving down the road, your finger will keep moving as long as you look at the bus. It stops when I tell you to look at your fingers now. You are looking at a stationary object. “Focus on the goal”.

“Once someone comes out and tries it, they become hooked,” Mize said. “Golfers don’t think to drop their clubs and pick up a rifle, and the next thing you know they’re a part-time shooter.”

“Pull, don’t aim. Follow the bird with your eyes and let the shotgun follow you,” advises Mike Brooks, a trainer and trainer at the Andy Dalton Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center. Brooks worked for the Greene County Sheriff’s Department for 17 years.

Brooks spent seven years with the Missouri Department of Conservation and the Andy Dalton Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center as Director of Outdoor Education. He teaches and mentors students of all ages and experience levels. “Here, we train conservation experts, serve as support roles for agencies, and offer certification programs for instructors as well as the NRA and ATA.” Brooks is one of 14 certified instructors in the world who can train other instructors besides the general public.

“I teach three basics in basic shooting. One is the position of the hand on the gun. Two is that your eyes should be on the target. Three is getting the proper preparation time.”

“Aside from stance, you also need to know which eye is your dominant eye and make sure the gun fits them,” Brooks says. “There’s nothing more satisfying than watching a man smash a clay target when he’s never held a gun.”

When students go to the range, the instructor walks them through stance, shot flow (as they shoot), and proper gun control, then gives everyone tips. As a coach, they will be able to tell you why certain things happened.

It’s important to focus on one basic element at a time, such as weapon stance and proper positioning. “You want to put 60 percent of your weight on your front leg and keep your knees slightly bent. Keep your feet no more than shoulder-width apart, and most importantly, don’t wobble from side to side when moving your rifle or shotgun. Move the waist up and turn around to follow the bird,” advises Brooks.

Often, when someone has a bad habit, it just takes practice to correct the habit and form new and better ones. For example, women (and some men) tend to want their waists leaned back when shooting. This is wrong. Likewise, if you’re right-handed, put 60 percent of your weight on your left foot, the front foot, and vice versa.

Brooks recommends continuing after you pull the trigger. Don’t stop moving your gun, follow up after shooting. You’ll be able to see the target shatter with peripheral vision (assuming you hit it).

Brooks observed a 75-year-old man who had hunted all his life and believed he was right-eye dominant. He came to the shooting range, and when Brooks watched him, he noticed something that only a well-trained trainer or trainer would notice. Although the man is right-handed, his left eye is dominant. Demonstrating through a simple vision test, Brooks was able to determine the predicament the man was facing without even knowing it was affecting his hunting skills.

“We interrupt the line of sight and force the weaker eye to take over and aim the shotgun, and it’s done instantaneously,” Brooks explained.

Seventeen percent of women are intersectionally dominant. This is more common in women than in men. This means that women can be right-handed but have a dominant left eye.

Most guns are made for the average man: for men between 5’8 and 6′. This creates a problem for women that the stock is too long or too short and the comb of the stock is too low for women. Brooks recalls Browning, a manufacturer of high poles for women.

For lead times, this will depend on the angle you face the chute. Think of the lower numbers on a clock, if you’re standing at eight o’clock (8) and a bird comes from the chute behind you, you only need one finger ahead. This means you want the barrel to be a finger’s width in front of the clay bird. You also want to shoot when the bird is ascending, not descending.

If you’re standing at six o’clock with the bird shooting to your left, you’ll want to guide with two fingers before pulling the trigger.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that you have the confidence to think of the gun as an extension of your arm. Keep your eyes on the target. When it (the target) gets to where your arm and the gun stick out, you pull the trigger and move on to the barrel. You will succeed!

When skeet shooting, you’ll want to shoot the first target coming from the left first, as it’s going up, and then you’ll only have a few seconds to move the barrel slightly and shoot at the second clay bird. In this sport, it’s all about timing.

Practice, practice, practice.
