How to Avoid Hearing, "You Have Breast Cancer…"

Breast cancer scares all women. Most of us know someone — a friend, family member, co-worker, neighbor — who was treated for breast cancer or something more serious and died from the disease. Historically, breast cancer was diagnosed after a woman sought medical attention for a painful or palpable mass. Annual mammograms become the “gold standard” of breast cancer screening; the goal becomes finding tumors before they’re felt.

However, a mammogram is a late test. It doesn’t prevent cancer; it detects cancer. Women have unreasonably high expectations of the technology’s ability to reduce cancer risk. A recent study published in Annals of Internal Medicine reported that women typically overestimate the risk-reducing ability of mammograms by more than 100 times. (1)

Mammograms give a false sense of security that you are in good health. Sensitivity, or the number of women with cancer who had a positive mammogram, ranged from 54% to 58% in women younger than 40 and 81% to 94% in women older than 65. In women aged 40 to 65, the mammograms used to identify tumors depend on many variables: lesion size, hormone use, breast tissue density, overall image quality, and the radiologist’s interpretation skills.

Only a small percentage (0.1%-0.5%, depending on age) of women screened are found to have cancer. Studies have shown that for every death prevented by screening, there are at least 200 false positive results. (2) The number of follow-up procedures generated by a cancer screening program, such as repeat mammograms, ultrasounds, and MRIs, a disease in which the cost increases exponentially. In the United States, biopsies that turn out to be benign cost the healthcare system more than $1 billion annually. (3)

Screening has another potentially harmful effect. Abnormal mammogram results turned out to be false positives, leaving women psychologically harmed. A new survey developed by Brodersen and colleagues and released this month (7/07) measured six psychosocial dimensions: anxiety, behavioral influence, feelings of depression, impact on sleep, breast exams, and sexual behaviour. Women who screened for abnormal mammograms that were later confirmed to be false positives were negatively affected in all six categories, the survey showed.

what else can i do

Digital infrared imaging (digital IR), also known as thermography, has been FDA-approved for breast health screening since 1982. It is painless, noninvasive and does not use radiation. The scan detects and records heat patterns on the skin that are invisible to any other tool.

Abnormal cells need a lot of nutrients to grow quickly. Through a process called angiogenesis, new blood vessels are pulled in the direction of the atypical cells. Combined with the release of cytokines and nitric oxide, additional blood flows into the area, increasing heat in the tissue, which can be detected with thermal imaging.

Normal skin surface temperature is symmetrical, with a left-right deviation of less than 0.3C. New digital infrared cameras can detect differences as small as 0.1C. A temperature change of more than 1.0C indicates the presence of abnormal, possibly precancerous cells. These subtle changes can be detected seven to eight years before the lump becomes palpable or detectable with mammography.

What is a thermal imaging program?

After undressing to the waist, it takes about 15 minutes to equilibrate to room temperature. An experienced technician performs three scans—front, left, and right—with arms extended overhead. Then place your hands in cold water for a full minute. When the sympathetic nervous system is cooled, normal blood vessels constrict; abnormal blood vessels remain the same size or dilate. A second set of scans was used for comparison. After the scan is complete, the exam is over.

Why doesn’t everyone take this test?

Why don’t doctors recommend this test more often? Why don’t they offer it in their offices? Abnormal scans cannot be corrected with medication. Conventional doctors are not trained to use vitamins, supplements, and detoxification, the fundamental tools to restore damaged physiology. If a woman’s mammogram is normal, abnormal thermography is ruled out by doctors as a false positive. This is a missed opportunity to truly prevent cancer.

Despite its current status, breast thermography has been studied for over 30 years. There are more than 800 peer-reviewed studies on breast thermography in index-medicus. The database represents more than 250,000 women, with many studies ranging in size from 37,000 to 118,000 participants. Some women with positive temperature records were followed for up to 12 years; 35% of those with positive thermal analysis later developed breast cancer.

what can you do

If abnormalities are found in your thermograms, proactive steps can be taken to heal the breast tissue, and progress can be monitored non-invasively with serial scans. If you can’t find a doctor with a digital IR device, there are important steps you can take to promote breast health:

o Diet: Eat organically grown food. The pesticides collect in fatty tissue, and the breasts can be a reservoir of estrogenic chemicals. Eliminate all caffeine, chocolate, MSG, aspartame, and herbs with estrogenic properties, especially soy. Studies have found that soy supplements increase the risk of breast cancer, especially in postmenopausal women.

o Practice: Walking and swinging your arms move the lymphatic vessels. Reducing the congestion of breast tissue reduces the risk of cancer.

o Eliminate hormones: Discuss options for removing birth control pills and synthetic hormone replacements with your doctor. The link between hormones and breast cancer has been proven. (5)

o Supplements: Many supplements have been shown to have positive effects on breast tissue. Here are some examples:

1. DIM (Diindolylmethane) Phytochemicals found in cruciferous vegetables have anti-cancer activity and can also repair damaged DNA.

2. turmeric (curcumin) kills cancer cells and has powerful anti-angiogenic properties

3. drink green tea or take Green Tea Extract Capsules Linked to lower risk of breast cancer. All of these are available at your local health food store.

Women need to drive the industry and push traditional doctors to do family work. The new cameras are digital, and they are much better than the cameras of 30 years ago. For women who are young, high-risk, have dense breasts, or want to take a more active role in their breast health, digital breast scanning is the way to go.
