Internet Pornography – In Pursuit of Our Children
In 2006, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children released its latest report on research into online victimization of adolescents. This is a follow-up to research conducted between 1999 and 2000 that published information on the current state of online pornography, child predators and pedophile activity. The messages are both encouraging and discouraging.
Evidence is mounting that criminals are using the Internet to target our teens. The evidence now shows these startling facts:
- 1 in 7 young people experience unwanted sexual temptation on the internet
- 1 in 3 young adults have experienced unwanted pornography on the Internet
- 1 in 11 Teens Experience Aggressive Behavior Against Them Because of the Internet
Encouraging progress has been made in educating our youth about Internet trolling. However, while the percentage of solicitation has declined slightly, the number of youth who have experienced unwanted aggressive solicitation has increased as more young people communicate on the Internet through chat rooms, email and instant messaging forums . Criminals are becoming more aggressive and more brazen in their attempts to gain access to our children. What is certain is that our children are being stalked like prey.
Here are some shocking statistics about this criminal activity:
- The average age at which our children are exposed to online pornography is 11.
- The largest consumers of Internet pornography are the 12-17 age group.
- Eighty percent of 15- to 17-year-olds have had multiple episodes of hardcore pornography on the Internet.
- A staggering 90 percent of teens aged 8 to 16 view pornography online. Most of them are seen while kids are doing their homework, and unsolicited. These images just pop up, attacking our children with the graphic products of these criminals.
- Nearly 29 percent of kids freely gave their home address on the Internet.
- Another 14 percent gave their email address for free.
- There are over 3,000 URLs, and if you make a mistake, our kids could be exposed to Internet pornography. If you doubt this, try Pokemon or Action Man’s innocent words. Criminals want kids to misspell an innocent word in order for our kids to see these images.
The question that must be asked is why our children are being targeted. Porn offenders, pedophiles, and predators all know that teenage minds are curious by nature. Graphical images initiate a series of natural emotional responses in our brains, releasing various chemicals called endorphins. These are chemicals in the brain that provide a sense of pleasure or well-being. In essence, viewing images creates a natural chemical euphoria. Porn is a drug. The more exposure to the drug, the more the child wants to see the drug for a feeling of euphoria or well-being. This leads to children viewing more and more pornography on the Internet and can lead to purchasing access to pornographic sites. These criminals go after our children because they are easy targets for their wares. This problem is compounded by the fact that our children’s brains are not yet developed enough to connect logical decision-making processes with emotional ones. Continuous exposure to online pornography interferes with mature decision-making processes and brain development.
Eventually, some kids can’t be satisfied with pure images and must seek higher levels of hardcore pornography, and even perform some action. Seeing people as objects of simple gratification rather than individuals deserving of respect is the endgame. These criminals have figured it out. By the way, the most common ways pornmakers reach our kids on the web are pop-ups, misspelled URLs, misrepresented website links, and automated email links. Our children are being stalked and hunted by shrewd and aggressive businessmen who use pornography as their bait.
So what should we do? Our kids can access the web everywhere. Our first point of protection must be our home. We must install protection on our home computers to keep these criminals out.
