You Haven’t Got the Sense God Gave a Goose – Or Have You?
“You don’t get the God-given sense of the goose!” I heard that line almost every time I made a mistake growing up. So, I started watching geese. I quickly realized two things; I love watching geese, and geese aren’t stupid! I’ve spent a lot of time observing geese, and I’ve read a lot about why they behave the way they do. As a chaplain and Army chaplain, I learned some valuable “goose feel” lessons. I want to share some lessons and how they relate to our lives as followers of Jesus Christ.
Goose Fact #1: When each goose flaps its wings, it creates a “lift” or “updraft” for the birds following it. By flying in a “V” formation, it is estimated that the flock as a whole flies 70% more distance than each individual bird alone. When Cherry and I drove from Maryland to Missouri a few years ago, we saw hundreds of thousands of geese in flight! Estimated to be 750,000 to 900,000 geese! As we drove, the sky completely darkened at noon and a large flock of geese formed for over ten miles! This is one of the most amazing sights we have ever seen! Wow! (Let me say it backwards – wow!)
Goose Sense Lesson #1: Christian followers share a sense of community and common bond through Jesus Christ. With a vision from God, we are able to more easily reach the goals God has set for us as we “lift up” each other and travel driven by fellowship. “But you, Timothy, belong to God; so stay away from all these evil things, and follow what is right and good. Pursue a godly life, and faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. Fight the good fight of our faith. Hold fast to the eternal life God has given you, which you have confessed before many witnesses.” (Bible, 1 Timothy 6:11-12, New Testament). Good goose feeling means people doing good things for others.
Goose Fact #2: When a goose breaks out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and drag of flying alone. It snaps back into formation to take advantage of the lift from the rest of the flock and avoid the high winds of all the other flapping geese. Remember the scene in Top Gun where Maverick and Goose (ironically) are sucked into the ocean by the wingman’s “jet stream”? This is the same concept as goose.
GOOSE SENSE Lesson 2: There’s a lot more “drag and drag” from the world when we try to fly alone! We should be willing to let others help “carry our burdens” – and we should be willing to help others carry theirs too! Learn to do “random acts of kindness” for others. Help an old lady put her groceries in the car. Rake your neighbor’s leaves. Bring dinner to someone who is sick. Offer to babysit a young couple so they can go out for a night. Give your pastor and his wife a restaurant gift certificate. Our oldest daughter had just had twins in North Dakota and we were about to ride out of Missouri on our motorcycles when a couple from our church called and said they wanted to buy us plane tickets so we could go early reach there. I was about to say “no” because I was looking forward to the ride, and then he dropped the “B” on me. He said, “It would be a great blessing to us if you would allow us to do this!” I had to accept it then, because I learned long ago that “being a blessing to others will also be a blessing to us.” Good Good judgment means spending good, quality time with fellow believers. Share Jesus with those you love so your family and closest friends become other believers.
Goose Fact #3: When the lead goose reels, it spins back into formation and the other goose immediately flies into the key position. All geese, except the sick ones, take turns to be at the head of the line. No fuss, no debate, no argument, they just do it! This is part of being a goose!
Rational Lesson #3: The ministry of the church does not belong to the salaried pastor. It’s not just for deacons and elders. Every believer must participate in the ministry of the church. It pays to take turns performing difficult tasks, and it’s good to share leadership responsibilities. Like geese, we depend on each other for our gifts and talents. Besides, when our consistent goal is to bring honor, praise, honor and glory to Jesus Christ – it doesn’t matter who does the actual work! See Colossians 3:23–24. Every believer is a follower—a follower of Jesus Christ and the shepherds of his flock. But every believer is also a leader—based on your spiritual gifts and talents, which you must use to do good for God’s kingdom. Good judgment means believers do good deeds for the kingdom of God and for pilgrims from other kingdoms.
Goose Fact #4: All geese fly in “HONK” formation to encourage the geese ahead to “keep on hold” on target!
Goose Sense Lesson 4: I implore you to make sure all your “honking” is encouraging in nature! For heaven’s sake – for kingdom’s sake – every time you speak to or talk about someone else – make sure you only say good, “uplifting”, loving and encouraging words! In the Kingdom of God, and in the Christian life, there is no place for gossip, slander, denial, “against,” slander, and tearing each other down! “Beloved, if God loves us so much, we should love each other too.” The HONKINGS of GROWING Congregations is inspiring and “uplifting”! A growing congregation is a happy congregation! Our individual and collective mission is to be “conformed to the image of God’s beloved Son, Jesus Christ”. (Romans 8:29). For Jesus’ sake, let’s “lift up” each other! Let’s say GOOD GOOSE SENSE things to each other. Let’s say GOOD GOOSE SENSE things about each other. Good judgment means encouraging each other to “keep on” to reach the rewarding goal of God’s call from on high in Jesus Christ!
Goose Fact #5: When a goose is sick and unable to continue flying, two other geese will break out of formation and follow it to help and protect it. They stay with it until it dies or is able to fly again. Then they set off in another formation or overtake their flock.
Goose Sense Lesson 5: I’m glad God has given believers “Goose Sense!” His words teach us to support one another in bad times as well as in good times. He taught us to lift each other up when we fall. When relationships fail, when children rebel, when careers crumble, when bad things happen to good people, when people die untimely, when trouble strikes (and it will eventually come to us all), God’s Word speaks to believers Said a word. Galatians 6:2 says, “Bearing one another’s burdens fulfills the law of Christ.” Verses 9-10 remind us, “Let us not grow weary in doing good; for in due season we will reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, Do good to all at every opportunity, especially to those who are earthly. House of Faith.” Good goose feeling means standing together in good times and bad, standing up for each other and for the less fortunate out.
Goose Fact #6: A pair of geese will find each other and stay together for life. Together they lived, traveled, and had children until one of them died. Then the other goose will find another mate and become a life mate again.
GOOD GOOSE SENSE LESSON #6 A monogamous relationship is GOOD GOOSE SENSE! First of all, that’s the way God planned it! (See Genesis 2-3). Second, it prevents a whole host of problems, including divorce, sex crimes, broken and blended families, financial burdens, child behavior problems, and more. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying these things don’t exist in monogamous relationships either, but statistics show that they are more common when people are in multiple relationships. (My 34 years of ministry experience have taught me, “the grass isn’t greener on the other side of the fence!” It is very gratifying to see more and more young people in our society deciding to remain abstinent and celibate until marriage The — that’s certainly a step in the right direction since my generation (teenagers in the late 60’s and early 70’s at the height of the “sexual revolution”). If you or your teen are interested , visit True Love Waits on the internet. Good goose feeling means waiting for someone you know God intends to spend the rest of your life with, and then spending the rest of your life with that person!
In short, what does GOOD GOOSE SENSE LESSONS say to believers?
love each other. Pray for each other. encourage each other. stand with each other. Help each other up. Help each other. Stand together and stand up for each other. Stick to it. love each other. (I know, I’ve said it, but it needs to be said twice, doesn’t it?)
I pray that all believers hear and practice the lessons of the goose. Do you feel like God gave a goose? If you do GOOD GOOSE SENSE things to each other, you will. If you do good things for each other, you will. Use your GOOD GOOSE SENSE – you’ll be glad you did!
