Why People Don’t Seek Mental Health Treatment
As school shootings increase across the United States, the debate over the solution continues. One of the most talked about reasons behind mass shootings is the mental state of the shooter himself. Most mass shooters have a few things in common.
1. Growing up in an orphan family
2. Taking Prescription Psychotropic Medications
3. Stressful events have occurred in your life
For category #1, the solution is obvious. We need to reform family courts in such a way that there are no “winning” parents and “losing” parents. I discuss this topic in depth in a published report to the United Nations entitled Global Human Trafficking in Family Law Courts, available on Amazon.
However, for the sake of this article, I want to focus on mental health. There is no denying that our school system and our healthcare system are dispensing psychotropic drugs like candy! Kids who can’t pay attention in class are quickly prescribed Ritalin. Depressed teens rush to Prozac; adults don’t fare much better.
Let’s look at modern day rappers like “Lil Xan”, “Future”, and the recently deceased 20 year old rapper “Lil Peep”, who died from Xanax pills containing fentanyl. The rapper is seen on Instagram regularly swallowing a handful of Xanax pills every day. Young fans who adore him are likely to follow suit.
The U.S. leads the world in prescribing antidepressants, according to the Business Insider news site. According to an article it published, it was found that 12 percent of Americans were taking some kind of medication for mental illness.
There are pros and cons to these numbers. Take South Korea as an example, a very developed country, but it ranks third in suicide rate. In Korean culture, going to the doctor for depression is a social stigma and shows weakness, especially for men. This is not surprising considering that 80% of all suicides in the world are committed by men. With societal pressure to be “stoic,” mental illness is all but ignored in Korea and among men in general, and people start committing suicide left and right.
On the other hand, the US ranks between 30th and 40th for suicide rates (depending on the study). Therefore, there is some evidence that antidepressants may be effective. Or is it just cultural? Despite being a poor country, Jamaica regularly ranks last in suicide rates. Although poor, the community is very tight-knit and their culture is very cheerful. Probably because marijuana is legal in the country! who knows!
However, I do know one thing; antidepressants and other medications used to treat mental illness have many side effects. “Suicidal thoughts” are often listed as one of the main side effects of Prozac. Let’s imagine! Drugs designed for people with suicidal thoughts! There is no question that taking psychotropic drugs alters brain chemistry, just like alcohol or any other narcotic.
In my opinion, occupational therapy, talk therapy, and community interaction are the best ways to treat depression. Once again, however, these types of therapies also have drawbacks.
Every time an American sees a counselor for depression, suicidal thoughts, or any mental health issue, they are “documented” and “stereotyped.” Those who regularly see a mental health counselor could be used against them in a custody battle, or those who try to buy a gun.
Imagine you’re struggling with depression, so you go to a counselor, only to have it used against you in the future. This is why many people, myself included, are afraid to see a mental health professional during a stressful time. Once you visit these people, you are very “labeled” and “marked”. If you find yourself facing any future lawsuits, the court can find your medical records and they will say:
“Ah! You’ve been to a mental health counselor multiple times for depression! You’re not fit to own a gun or have custody of your kids!”.
In some cases, this may be true, while in others, it may be an unfair stereotype. People usually laugh at you or take a step back when they mention they went to a therapist or took antidepressants. We associate mental health problems with schizophrenia or severe manic depression. The truth is, we all suffer from some form of mental illness.
If you get too happy, your doctor will say you’re “manic.” If you’re too short-tempered, they’ll say you have a “Type A” personality. If you are too sad, they say you have severe “depression”. It’s a lot like going to a mechanic. If you talk long enough, they’ll find out you have a problem!
The reason is very simple. Visiting a mental health counselor can cost you your rights to your children, your guns, and your personal reputation. This is a sad fact. In our current system, most people do not seek help for fear of being demonized.
The main ways we can prevent mass shootings is to encourage a friendly community, surround ourselves with caring people, do our best to involve parents, and if possible, seek natural remedies for mental health disorders through medication (exercise, work therapy, etc.). . If you hear voices or try to kill yourself regularly, then of course you should seek medical help.
Requiring a mental health screening to buy a gun sounds like a good idea until you realize that most people don’t ask for help so they can buy a gun! Why not screen people for their health before they buy alcohol, get a driver’s license or board a plane? Mental health can make almost any activity dangerous. Our nation must stop looking for “quick” fixes and start looking for the real reasons for our demise.
Our fast food, sexual violence, entertainment, glorification misinterpretation anarchism. Only with “freedom” can there be “responsible” freedom. However, choices are made in life, and those choices are made in terms of how it will affect society as a whole. Lawmakers cannot address these issues. These are issues that require families to come forward, come together, and take back the reign of traditional values without overdoing it.
A middle ground between progressive ideas and traditional values must be balanced. We can’t be afraid to advance our society, but we also can’t completely disregard the traditional ways of life that have served us as humans for so long.
Finally, we must encourage greater anonymity within our mental health sector. Gotta love the “confessional” of the Catholic Church. If people could get treatment anonymously without as much paperwork, then I’m sure more people would come forward and ask for help.
As a boxing coach, the job often required me to be a facilitator, talking to my students and building their confidence. If you’re depressed and need help, but don’t trust or fear doctors, I think a good option is to be active in a group setting. Building relationships is critical to fighting mental illness. Suicide rates are often low in poor countries because their communities are well-connected. Poor they may be, but no one is more lonely than the isolated modern man, typing away in a cold, artificially lit office cubicle.
