The Murder of Alfalfa – Part III
This is the final installment of our three-part series on the Alfalfa Murders. In 1954, Carr was arrested for drunkenness and disorderly conduct and got into a scuffle with the police as they brought him into the station. Bail was set at $100.
In January ’58, he was emerging from a pub and getting into his station wagon – when a bullet came through the window and hit him in the arm. The identity of the mysterious sniper has never been determined. Carr told police he didn’t know who was trying to shoot him.
In December of that year, he pleaded guilty to petty larceny for felling 15 fir trees in Sequoia National Forest. He was fined $225.
A month later, on Jan. 21, Carr was shot and killed by his former partner, Bud Stiltz, 38. Bud was a mechanic and welder, and he and Carl had worked together as hunting and fishing guides. Carl borrows one of Bud’s dogs, then loses it on a trip. When the dog was found and returned, the man demanded a reward, and Karl gave him $65. He felt that since it was Bud’s dog, Bud had an obligation to repay him. Bud is tired of Carl pestering him. To get him off the hook, he tells Carl he’ll give him $35.
That night, Carl had a few drinks with a studio still photographer friend, Jack Piott. They went to Bud Stillz’s house. He lives with actor Crash Corrigan’s ex-wife and their three children. Carl introduces Jack as a police officer, and Jack presents a fake badge. Stiltz says he has no money, and Carl becomes aggressive. They started fighting. Mrs Corrigan and her two daughters fled the house, but Stiltz’s 14-year-old stepson Tommy Corrigan stayed behind. He said Carl hit Stills in the face with the clock. Stiltz went into the bedroom and pulled a .38-caliber revolver from the bedside drawer. They struggle. The gun fired harmlessly, but Tommy Corrigan was slightly injured by a large piece of debris flying from the bullet hole in the wall. Carr disarmed Stiltz, who then pushed Carl into a closet and retrieved the pistol. That’s when Tommy fled to the front porch when he heard a gunshot. Jack Piot threw away the fake badge before the police arrived.
During the investigation, Stiltz tearfully testified. Due to being badly injured in the fight, he wears a blindfold. He said Carl came out of the closet with a pocket knife and that he opened fire in self-defense. The coroner’s jury returned a verdict of justified homicide.
But some 40 years later, Stiltz is long dead, and Tommy Corrigan has been outspoken about how disturbed he was by the rumors he heard on the Internet. It’s amazing that people were still interested in alfalfa in 2001, but they said he died in a failed drug deal, which wasn’t the case. Tommy said he didn’t believe his stepfather’s version of what happened. He said Bud was mean. “He used to push me around.” He accused Stiltz of deliberate murder of Carl Switzer. “He didn’t have to kill him,” he said, who voluntarily testified in the investigation but was never subpoenaed.
Tommy “Butch” Bonds doesn’t trust Stiltz either. He believed Carl was unarmed. “Yes, he can use his fists,” he said, “because he’s an old country boy. But I never knew he could carry a weapon.” So the man who pulled the trigger was acquitted. But before his death in 1984, Bud Stillz received a mysterious Christmas card every year signed “Alfie”.
Carl was only 31 years old when he died.
His older brother Harold also tragically died in 1967. He got into an altercation with a man and shot him, according to his daughter. Hours later, he took his own life.
Carl’s ex-wife gave birth to a son. She later remarried and the boy grew up not knowing who his real father was. When he finally found out, in his 20s, he contacted some of the surviving Our Gang actors, including Spanky McFarland. He told them he wanted to know more about Carl.
He has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. George Cook, Fritz Lang, Joseph Mankiewicz. Kirk Douglas, Elizabeth Taylor, Bob Hope, Natalie Wood and Mickey Rooney. Directors like Stanley Kramer, Ellen Dewan, and Edward L. Kahn used him repeatedly because they enjoyed working with him.
Few other child actors are as well known and loved as Alfalfa. Even posthumously, he continues to make headlines with the name he coined 20 years ago. Alfalfa over $50 was killed in the fight.
Carl Switzer is an intelligent, ambitious and talented dynamo full of energy and personality. He loves the film industry and isn’t afraid to knock down its daunting gates.
