A Home For Ahmednagar’s Deserving

When Girish Kulkarni was in college, his friends took turns inviting each other to their house. “Let’s go to my house,” they’d say. Except for one friend. He would go to other people’s homes, but he would not invite anyone to his home. If someone asked him where he lived, he would change the subject.

Out of curiosity, Girish and his friends found the man’s address and set off for his home. Much to their surprise, they ended up in a house in the middle of the red-light district of Ahmednagar. Their friend’s mother was in the oldest profession in the world. So did his 14-year-old sister.

Their friend was very embarrassed, but to his credit, he spoke up anyway. “What would you think if it were your mother and sister?” he asked Girish. This was a turning point for young Girish, who is now a respected professor.

He made it his life’s mission to provide a home for the children of prostitutes. He wanted to give them a safe space to grow up like normal kids. He didn’t want them to have to run out and buy cigarettes and alcohol for customers. He didn’t want them to be addicted to drugs at an early age — or to be drawn into prostitution themselves.

Over the past 20 years, Professor Girish Kulkarni and his team have all but eradicated underage prostitution in Ahmadnagar – the quintessential phenomenon in India – by rescuing the children of prostitutes and those brought in as sex slaves. Unique.

Rameshbhai of Caring Friends took me on a tour of the Snehalaya campus Girish is building on the outskirts of the city, which includes facilities for children born with HIV and a hospital for HIV-infected adults.

Children are educated at the best schools in town, and Girish is building a top-notch high school on campus. I’ve met all kinds of kids, from a newly rescued toddler to a 25-year-old woman pursuing a degree in computer science.

Snehalaya also runs education and outreach programs to reduce infections by promoting safer practices among female sex workers and gay people. 24/7 Children’s Helpline responds to calls about abused children, child labourers, child beggars and child prostitutes. Snehalaya also runs a home for unwed mothers and an adoption center.

Snehalaya has impressive secondary and tertiary leadership and management skills. This provides the depth of leadership, continuity and scalability that many NGOs lack. Girish went on to teach political science courses at local universities; many of his students, inspired by his commitment and enthusiasm, eventually joined Snehalaya.

“I wouldn’t trade that experience for a permanent job that pays twice that,” one of them told me. Also impressive: More than 25 percent of Snehalaya’s funding comes from the concerned citizens of Ahmednagar.

Principal Suwalalji Shinghvi, who encourages local families to visit and support the campus, is a warm and caring old man – popularly known as Bapu for his age and Gandhi-like qualities – who spends time with the children, blowing balloons and them Play with.

Rameshbhai told me that over the years, Bapu brought several young women of marriageable age (the children of sex workers) into his own house to live with his own daughter-in-law for six months, teaching them how to behave like a Orthodox Indian ‘Bahu’. I was so touched beyond words.
