Is Your Child’s Reading Up to Speed? Five Signs to Look For and What You Can Do About It

According to the Michigan Department of Education’s National Bureau of Research, 60 percent of children ages 3 to 8 face challenges reading.

For 20 to 30 percent of these children, reading is one of the most difficult tasks they have in school. Most people with dyslexia will benefit from prevention, early intervention programs such as phonics, fluency development and reading comprehension strategies, and trained teachers.

If your child was a poor reader in 1st grade, they may be a poor reader in 4th grade, too. 75% of kids will struggle with reading in high school and college if they don’t get help by age 9. The high school dropout rate is 10% to 15%, and the college dropout rate is 4%.

Half of all teens and young adults with criminal records have dyslexia.

The National Literacy Institute defines reading activity as: word recognition, comprehension, fluency, and motivation. It is also a major foundational skill for everyone in school-based learning.

There are different classifications of good basic reading skills according to intellectual structure. Before a child or adolescent can experience the reading activities described above, they must first develop the abilities required for good vision. Watch for these signs that may indicate that their visual skills are undeveloped:

1) Do they squint and rub their eyes while reading?

2) Do they have to keep their fingers in place while reading?

3) Can they see all the letters clearly, or are they blurry?

4) In class, it is difficult to change focus quickly when they look up at the blackboard from their desks and back to their desks.

5) Can they quickly describe what they are reading?

If your child has trouble seeing images clearly, their teacher may also describe them as having trouble concentrating or being easily distracted. This may be because they cannot see a clear image. To see clearly, their right and left eyes must be perfectly coordinated so that the brain’s optic nerve combines them into one image. If that doesn’t happen, they see reprints, or get tired quickly, or the letters of the words look blurred and jumbled.

A little boy I worked with had to move his head from left to right to read. He couldn’t follow in a straight line and gave up after reading a quarter of a page. His teacher classified him as having a learning disability and scheduled him to be tested in the distant future. Michael, I started my SOI training program in September. In November, his parents called me over to their house because they wanted to show me something. I arrived to see my parents and Michael sitting in the living room. Michael had a book in his hand, and as soon as I sat down, he started reading aloud. His reading is flawless and he speaks with confidence. He read a full page before putting the book down. All three are ecstatic about Michael’s progress. I continued to work with Michael for the next year and a half. He turned out to be a great reader and was really good at making his own fish flies! His vision has self-corrected, which in turn has strengthened his other abilities.

Reading glasses can correct blurry vision. However, vision therapy consisting of special eye exercises is now recognized by the National Eye Institute as the most effective treatment for converging inadequacy, or blurred vision.

If your child has any of the above symptoms, they may be diagnosed with a learning disability, ADD or ADHD, or dyslexia. Take a look at their vision first. I recommend seeing a Structure Of Intellect Practitioner or an optometrist who specializes in vision therapy.
