List Building Secrets

It is often said that the money is on the list. The bigger the list, the more money you make.

But that’s only partially true—and here’s why.

In fact, the quality of your listing determines how much money you can make. Some of my biggest and best conversions and thousands of dollars in sales have been listed in a small but high quality list. In fact, the clients on the list were so nice, some of them even sent me gifts after paying thousands of dollars for my products. It is an infallible law of nature that quality and quantity are often inversely proportional. So, given the choice, I’d happily choose a small portion of good quality every time!

So how do you go about getting quality listings from scratch?

After generating high-quality traffic to your website, you need to retain as much of this traffic as possible by capturing the names of high-quality visitors. There are several ways to do this.

The most popular are pop-ups, which visitors hate and webmasters love – simply because they actually work.

Increasingly popular are squeeze pages, where you literally squeeze a visitor’s name and email address before allowing them to the site. The effectiveness of both methods depends on the appeal of your copywriting and bullet points to convince visitors to fill out the name capture form. Depending on how a visitor arrives at your site (clicking on AdWords, reading an article, a search engine result, or a recommendation), you can achieve conversion rates from 20% to twice that number.

But how do you want to consistently drive more conversions — and high-quality conversions?

All you need to do is provide some content for your visitors to read forward You ask for their names and addresses. That way you don’t violate the first rule of marketing (don’t annoy your prospects). Plus, you can prove your worth by letting them see the kind of information you’re about to provide. That’s far better than a headline – however jarring – and a list of bullet points, however catchy. After all, that’s bragging, never more believable than let them see for themselves how good you are.

This is another benefit of this method. If a visitor subscribes to your list, after they have sampled some items, it means they are more likely to be matched with what you have to offer. The closer the match, the more likely you are to turn a prospect into a customer. You don’t want people on your list who are unlikely to become customers. Quality trumps quantity every time.

But the highest quality listings in the world are only as good as the last time you mailed them. Don’t imagine that all the potential clients on your list are so enamored with you and your website that they’re sitting at their computers and willfully deleting every email that doesn’t have your name on them. You know, from your own experience, how many emails you get every quarter. So, your job is to get your name on the minds of potential customers.

You want to work hard to position yourself as a preferred supplier. Just like you might automatically think of Coca-Cola or Budweiser, when you’re thirsty, you want them to think of you as soon as they have a problem in your area of expertise.

For this reason, you should email your list at least once a week—and much more often at first. If they subscribed to the course in the first place, you might initially email them daily. This is a good beginning. Aim for once a week thereafter, which is why a regular newsletter is so valuable. Always remember that we humans need to repeat something 21 times to form a neural pathway in our brain to form a habit.

Once you’ve built a quality list through these methods, don’t ruin your reputation by selling something or delivering junk in every email. Offer lots of free stuff and only offer something for sale about every fourth email. Even then, only offer products that you own or are affiliated with that you have personal experience with or from someone you highly value.

You can also make your contacts more personal if you occasionally snail mail your list. Send them a free DVD or CD, as this is a surefire way to open a package, even if they don’t know your return address.

Once you have your list, protect it with your life, because it is this list—a quality list properly cultivated—that will provide you with an amazing lifestyle. Isn’t that something worth striving for?
