Raise Money For Investing Using 11 Poor Man Strategies

Unlike many of my financial blogging peers, I have earned street cred (credentials) when it comes to poverty. Back in the early 80’s, when we first arrived in San Jose, CA, my family lived with another family until my parents were able to save up to rent an apartment. The house we live in is a typical three bedroom, two bathroom home along McLaughlin Avenue. My parents are friends with adults who rent this house. They met in Chihuahua, Mexico.

Once my parents were able to rent an apartment, things didn’t get any easier. Even though they both work full time, they can only afford one bedroom in Sunny Court. My sister and I sleep in the living room. Food is not always plentiful. I remember a lot of times when I didn’t eat much and school was my only steady meal. Clothes are purchased at thrift stores as needed. Shoes are passed down from friends, or if money is saved from Payless Shoes.

In those days, living month after month was stressful, even for a child. There’s nothing worse than having your parents clearly trying to make ends meet and you being helpless. Back in Mexico, I would take to the streets and sell gum or polished shoes for cash. But in America, there are laws…child labor laws. In most cases, you will also need to be able to speak the language. At that time, I just started to learn English.

I’m not embarrassed to admit that as a kid I dived in dumpsters, stole from supermarkets, and did cleaning jobs for the grown-ups in the neighborhood. Anything that can help my family. I’m not proud of those illegal acts, they are avoidable now with adult eyes, but necessary for me in those days. A life without regrets is no life at all.

Based on my experience, today I can offer you a way to raise funds that may be well known among the poor, but little known among the middle class. Well, maybe my middle-class brethren do know the following ways they too can raise money, but probably think those ways are “below” them.

Most people perform these behaviors because they need money to pay bills, eat, and survive. I only do this because I want to invest with cash and not want to use leverage (debt).

1) Store aluminum cans and glass bottles instead of putting them in my recycling bin. After four months, I take them to a recycling plant in Oceanside, CA and sell them for $15 to $25. I don’t know much, but multiply that by 3 and you’ll be paying an extra $45 to $75 a year. Poor people don’t recycle; they seek out cans, plastic and glass bottles and sell them!

2) Sell valuables at pawnshops for quick cash. I’ve sold watches I didn’t wear (gifts to me for birthday/Christmas) and electronics. Save a lot of time.

3) Sell something on Craigslist. No longer using your bike? Create a Craigslist ad and sell it to a private party. Find valuable stuff around the house that you no longer need on Craigslist. If you have a lot of stuff with little value, then do #4.

4) Garage or yard sale. Jessica and I have at least two garage sales a year. We make about $100 per crap we sell.

5) Sell gift cards for cash. what! ? Yep… Ever get a gift card with cash value and know you won’t use it? Sell it to a friend or go scalp it on-site. If they don’t trust you, ask the other person to take the card and do a balance check.

6) Selling blood (I’ve never done this… so tasteless). Find your local blood bank and sell that plasma!

7) Sell your hair on eBay. Yes, you can sell your hair online. I’ve never done it because no one wants my hair, but if I had Fabio’s hair…

8) Do you have coins? Look under sofa cushions, under beds, under dusty utility drawers, under car floor mats, anywhere. If you’ve been saving change, it’s time to head to the supermarket and find your nearest Coin Star machine. It’s easy to use. Just dump in all your change and the machine will count every penny and print you a receipt that you can then take to the line to cash it out, just like a casino!

9) Start using coupons and take a break from organic food. When it comes to buying preservatives and junk food from the grocery store, the poor have no choice. For them, price is the selling point. But for us, we can choose healthier options like Trader Joe’s. Not telling you to live within your means, but if you want to save for an extra few months, this might be an option.

10) Take the bus or commute to work. This is a choice we have that the poor may not have. Depending on the city you live in, a bus ticket will run you about $30 to $45. Your daily drive to work and home could cost twice that amount, even with lower gas prices. Like #8 above, this is a temporary strategy. Don’t want to sit among the poor? Convince colleagues to join your savings plan. Or if you haven’t sold your bike, ride it to work for a month.

11) Buy cheap booze. I used to buy $11-15 Cabernet Sauvignon. I drink about two bottles a month. Then I found out that Sutter Home Moscato and Cab was on sale for $3.99! Back in the hood, I used to drink ale and bad beer. Now all I care about is cheap and tasty wine and micro/craft beer. However, when saving for an investment “plan,” I sometimes scale back the latter. You can brew your own!

Being poor has given me insight that most people at my level of wealth don’t have. I can start doing a few of the options above without feeling uncomfortable or awkward. I am comfortable with my situation and for me the above is an optional way to raise money for investment purposes only. But what about those who have to rely on these fundraising tactics to survive? I can imagine. If this is your life, I can give you an important piece of advice: stop blaming others and feeling sorry for yourself! This doesn’t help you at all. Instead, start by creating a list of ways you can improve. What to improve? Here are some checklists you’ll need to make and brainstorm:

1) I can improve myself (what I know and can do) through free means.

2) How I can improve my decision-making.

3) I can improve the way I spend my money.

4) I can improve people I know for free (the point is to find smart money, “better off” people and make them part of your network). You can count me as part of your network!
