Camping at -40C – How I Made the Perfect Sleeping Bag

Winter camping is serious business. Unlike summer camping, winter camping with the wrong sleeping bag can be disastrous. Get ready and you’ll sleep like a baby.

The most important piece of gear you must have is a really good sleeping bag. If you’ve checked prices lately, you’ll quickly realize that you could be paying a lot more for a good bag. A top-of-the-line down sleeping bag can easily run you $395.

There are different opinions on what kind of bag is the best. For the sake of argument, I’ll tell you about my winter camping experience on Cape Breton Island a few years ago.

I have an old, well used down war leftover bag, very light. I can’t keep warm at any temperature. When it gets wet, it takes a few days to dry out. I decided that if I was going to try camping 24/7, I would get something that actually worked.

While shopping around a supplier, I found a sleeping bag kit that looked like it would do the job. The insulation is Hollofil, a man-made fiber that dries easily. While I was there, I ordered enough Thinsulate to enable me to add a layer to the top and bottom of the bag.

With all the materials at hand and a model in front of me, I set out to build the best sleeping bag possible. My wife is upset because I broke all the sewing machine needles in the house. Another trip to town, and a few hours later, the best sleeping bag ever is sitting on the kitchen table for all to see. What’s amazing about this exercise is that I’ve never used a sewing machine in my life.

I could tell you many stories about my perfect bag, but this one will tell the truth.

It was midwinter in Cape Breton. Many feet of snow covered the Cape Breton Highlands in a thick blanket and we were caught in a very cold snap. In the highlands, temperatures reach -40 degrees Celsius. My partner and I set out to go skiing for two days. We’d ski down to a snowmobile lodge about eight miles away. The cottage is equipped with a wood and gas stove and several bunk beds.

We quickly adapted to the task of skiing on mountain trails and found the temperature to be cold but bearable. We arrived at the lodge around 4pm. Just before dark, I suggested that we should sleep outside in the snow. Kenny looked at me like I was crazy. Seriously, I stepped outside and stepped into a deep depression in the snow not far away. I then covered the depression with a layer of spruce bowtie and lined the bottom with the same.

After a hearty meal, we headed out to the den. Kenny has a nice down bag. We settled down overnight in -40C temperatures. After about an hour, Kenny was frozen and walked to the warm cabin. I slept like a baby in my homemade bag, warm and cozy. It works just fine. I could hear the trees cracking all night long as the temperature continued to drop.

Morning came and I tried a trick I learned years ago in service. I stood up, put on my boots, and walked a short distance in only my shorts. Five minutes later, I came back to dress and found them very nice and warm. The outer surface of your body cools down, which makes your clothes feel warmer.
