Red Farmer’s Biography

One of the original legendary “Gang of Alabama” Charles Lawrence “Red” Farmer was born on October 15, 1932 (his birth year is uncertain) in Nashville, Tennessee, after his parents moved with his mother in the mid-1940s Miami, Florida is separated.

It wasn’t until 1958 that Red moved to Hueytown part-time with Bobbie and Donnie Allison, racing there during the summer months and returning to work with his family as an electrician in the winter. During this time, construction progressed slowly, and Read often had to live on unemployment benefits to support his wife, children and mother-in-law. Finally, in 1962, Reid moved his family to Huyton, Alabama, where they settled and made it their home.

His first race was at Florida’s Opa-locka Raceway in 1948, driving a friend’s father in an old 1934 Ford Coupe. In 1936, he won a first prize of about $300 at the Dixie Speedway in Midfield, and again the next day at a feature event in Montgomery, where he took home about $600 Dollars, which are more bonuses he has earned in a long time.

After moving to Hueytown Red, he continued working as an electrician until he gave it up a few years later to devote himself to racing full time and embarked on an incredible journey over the next 60+ years. With an incredible 700 to 900 victories on dirt, asphalt and Super Speedway, Ray won the NASCAR Modified Championship in 1956 and then three late model athletes (now Busch series) champion. He has been voted NASCAR’s Most Popular Driver four times and has been inducted into the Talladega/Texaco Walk of Fame, Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, National Post Model Hall of Fame and International Motorsports Hall of Fame.

Farmer was the 1999 recipient of the Alabama Governor’s Award, presented annually to an individual or organization for their contributions to motorsports. Perhaps Farmer’s most prestigious award was being named in 2000 as one of NASCAR’s 50 greatest drivers of all time.

He has been married to his wife, Joan, for over 55 years and they have three children, two daughters, Cindy and Bonnie, and a son, Michael. He also has nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Red remains active as a NASCAR driver, regularly competing in the Talladega short track and serving as a consultant to the ARCA team.

Alabama gang legend Red Farm will be honored on a track where he still races at 77 years old. It was announced that Talladega Short Track will host the Red Farmer Classic on May 15, 2011 on the Eastaboga Dirt Road across from the Talladega Super – Speedway. In honor of Red’s number – 97 – the super late model race will run 97 laps and the winner will pay $9,700. In an interview with Stock Car Magazine, Red replied that “it’s an honor to have a race named after him, especially because they want to do it every year”. When asked if any track stood out to him the most The favorite red replied;

“Any track I win is my favorite. But I think Daytona and Talladega are my two favorite tracks. That’s unusual for a short-track driver. Of course, I Love Birmingham, Huntsville and Montgomery, the track we run Thursday, Friday and Saturday for 20 years. We run Huntsville on Thursday night, Birmingham on Friday night and Montgomery on Saturday night. Then we’ll Go somewhere and find a big race. Sometimes we run all the way to Manassas, Virginia, and run on Sunday, or somewhere in Tennessee. We run four nights a week many times. Basically On the road, I’ve always been a short-track driver, but I like Daytona and Talladega. I like Superspeedway.”

Someone asked him whether he prefers dirt roads or asphalt roads, and he replied;

Nothing but dirt. That’s one thing I really like. It’s just more fun. I now have two dirt bikes, super late model dirt bikes. I have a GRT and a CJ Rayburn chassis. I’m building a new engine for next year. In 2006 I will be celebrating my 58th year. My grandson has a car. We’re building a crate motor class for him to get him running. I don’t even care about short track asphalt racing anymore. To me, it’s dull compared to a good dirt track race. If you go to watch the World of Outlaws Super Late Model race with Scott Bloomquist, Billy Moyer, Rick Eckerd, Darrell Lanigan and Dale McDowell and the guys running the half mile dirt road, you’ll never go back and watch another Asphalt Race. You watch those guys perform, and that’s what I really like. I just love sideways, broadsides, dirt tracks on mats, and to me racing is a lot more fun than racing on asphalt. On tarmac, you can set up a car and go back next year without ever having to change it. It’s the same every week. But you go to a dirt road and you have to work on the road all the time. Sometimes it’s wet, sometimes it’s dry and slick, and sometimes it turns black and you have to work all night to keep up with the tracks. This is more interesting to me.
