Conserving Water is Good For the Environment (And Your Budget)

Conserving resources electricity, water and money is an important step in leading a sustainable lifestyle (personal and environmental). People try to save money every day, but many don’t connect resources with finances, forgetting that electricity and water bills make up a large portion of monthly expenses. But just because those resources and expenses are necessary doesn’t mean they can’t be cut, or used more thoughtfully and efficiently. Many times we act in wasteful ways simply out of habit. Habits can be broken, however, follow these tips to get rid of water-wasting habits.

1. Do not let the water run continuously when brushing teeth, washing dishes, and washing the car. Thousands of gallons of water are wasted every year simply because people don’t bother to turn off the tap while doing any day-to-day job. When brushing your teeth, make it a habit to turn off the water after wetting your toothbrush, and not turn it back on until you’re done brushing and ready to rinse. When cleaning up after meals, stack the dishes next to the sink, fill the sink half to two-thirds full with water, and add soap. Then place the plates one at a time in warm soapy water, stacking them to dry when done. Not only does this save a ton of water, it also keeps you from wasting soap and water from splashing on counters, floors, and you. Next time you wash your car, mix the soap and warm water solution in the bucket, then turn off the hose until a rinse is needed.

2. Avoid washing large loads of laundry or dishes until you have enough dirt to fill the machine. Washing machines and dishwashers use a lot of water. Next time you only have a few items to wash, hand wash the old fashioned way (using the guidelines in tip 1, of course). And encouraging family members and roommates to do the same will help protect the environment while also reducing the financial burden.

3. Be mindful of when you choose to water your lawn. Many cities and communities discourage residents from watering their lawns, gardens and plants on a hot day, especially during the summer months. This is because, during the hottest part of the day, most of the water evaporates before soaking into the soil. Avoid watering your lawn in direct sunlight as much as possible. Instead, watering in the early morning or late evening will be more efficient and effective.

Whether you are short of water or not, it should always be considered a precious resource, worthy of protection and care. The next time you feel tempted to cut corners and waste water for sheer convenience, remember that it’s one of humanity’s most important non-renewable resources. Simple actions like the ones listed above can go a long way in reducing wasted water, not to mention reducing your water bill.
