Feeding Koi Properly – Depends on the Season

The key to feeding your koi properly is how you feed your koi depending on the season. Actually, more specifically, it depends on the water temperature.

If your koi are kept in a heated pond, they can feed regularly throughout the year. Koi raised in heated ponds do not have to adapt to changes in water temperature.

Feeding koi properly during the summer promotes growth, aids in tissue maintenance and repair, and helps deposit fat and provide nutrients that the fish can store for winter use.

When the water temperature is between 64-68°F (18-20°C), your koi feeding plan should include a high-protein diet that promotes growth. Conversely, feeding koi in cooler temperatures requires less protein because then it becomes harder to digest. Instead, it is excreted into the water, which not only makes feeding more protein in colder temperatures a poor feeding plan, but also pollutes pond water.

You will need to evaluate what to feed your koi during the cooler months of fall and spring when the koi’s appetite is low. During this time, koi feeding should be switched from a high-protein diet to a wheat germ-based diet, which is easier to digest in cooler temperatures.

Feeding koi in temperatures below 46-50 degrees Fahrenheit should be discontinued entirely. In such water temperatures, koi will not eat at all, but rely on the nutrients they have stored to survive the winter.

When the weather starts to warm up again and your fish start looking for food, you can start a wheat germ based diet again. Then start mixing in higher protein summer foods gradually as the water warms up.

How much you feed your koi depends on their age and body temperature. Feeding koi fry is different than feeding koi adults. When the water temperature is around 68 degrees Fahrenheit, koi under 1 year old consume 5-10% of their body weight per day, koi 1 to 3 years old consume 5% of their body weight per day, and adult koi (3 years and older) consume 2% of body weight per day.

A good rule of thumb for feedings is to offer as much food as possible at each feeding, within 2-3 minutes. When you feed your koi, you will notice a surge in activity at the beginning of each meal, and then when they start to get full, they will eat more slowly. This is when you should stop eating.

As for feeding frequency, note that at temperatures around 68°F (20°C), plan on feeding 2-3 times a day. In cooler temperatures (50-59°F or 10-15°C) only one feeding per day is required.

As you can see, it is very important to pay attention to the season and temperature when keeping koi!
