Back to School – More Than a Shopping List
The start of a new school year brings your child a lot of excitement and maybe a little anxiety. So while you’re busy shopping for pencil cases and the perfect backpack, don’t forget to take the time to make sure your child is physically and mentally prepared for the year ahead.
1. Start by talking to your child about how they are feeling about the coming year. Are they worried about schedules, work overload, or new social situations? Many of these fears and anxieties can be easily dispelled by talking to you or your “was there, did that” sibling.
2. Schedule your child’s annual health checkup. It can be easy to overlook this once the hectic pace of the school year begins. Now is the perfect time to check your child’s height, weight, blood pressure, and developmental milestones. Your doctor may offer advice about diet, exercise, and child safety, if necessary.
3. Schedule physical exams for older children. If your child has participated in school sports in previous years, chances are they only need to take physical exams every two years. Call your child’s school and ask about their testing requirements and forms, and be sure to have the necessary forms for your child’s test ready for the doctor to sign.
4. Ask your child’s doctor about the immunization schedule. While your child may have received the most relevant immunizations before the age of two, for many diseases booster shots are required after age 11. You may also want to consider some optional vaccinations such as Guardisil, chickenpox and meningitis immunizations for girls over 12 years of age.
5. Make an appointment to speak with the school nurse. This is especially important if your child has a chronic health problem such as asthma or diabetes or needs to take medication at school. Provide the nurse with your child’s health history and contact information for your child’s doctor.
6. Schedule cleanings before school starts. Once school starts, it’s much harder to find a convenient appointment time. Time flies after school!
By taking care of these things now, you and your child can head into the new school year with a sense of preparation and well-being—and you should still have time to shop for the perfect backpack!
