The Route Less Travelled in Selling Yourself to Employers

One of the most annoying interview questions ever asked in Kenya is “Where do you see yourself in five (or ten) years”? I find this tiring because honestly, isn’t there another way to ask the same question?

The point of this question is to create a sense of direction and focus among the respondents. While I appreciate its value, since I’m an employer, I thought I’d be looking for something more important in this overused question.

What I really want to hear respondents tell me is, “If I gave you this job, what value would you add to my organization?”

How Years of Grand Corruption Can Directly Affect Your Job Search.

Because of our history, corruption has increased dramatically over a decade, and my generation doesn’t believe that commitment to work is worth it. They see a lot of people living a comfortable life with fraud and dishonesty.

This is by no means intended to paint Kenya as a fraudulent country, but the culture of fraud has been ingrained for about two decades. One of the effects of these years has been slow or stagnant economic growth. A generation later lives in the reality that finding a job in Kenya is an extremely difficult challenge, with more than 70% of people aged 21 to 35 without gainful employment. This condition is not of their making, but they have to live in it.

While I understand this fact, it is crucial for those who are directly affected by a deeply corrupt culture to organize their affairs in a way that supports honesty in achieving their goals, rather than enforcing a culture that works against them. important.

Most employers don’t like a false work ethic.

A common complaint among employers is that young people, commonly known as the unemployment age group, don’t like to work.

If the allegation is true, how did it happen?

These are the stories of the “successful” children of Shanda’s anti-corruption campaign. They watched a class teacher (just as an example) walk to report to school because they couldn’t afford a bike let alone a car and take over a public school as principal.

At the end of his first year on the job, the principal, who at that time grew a few inches on his belly, bought a 4×4 SUV that was a gas guzzler and went on to buy a piece of land; On this land they built a magnificent school, in direct competition with the government schools they headed. Has the head teacher had an identifiable business before? Oh no!

This generation sees the same principal rarely sitting in their office, coming to work drunk, but the only consequence of this behavior is that it costs a lot of money, even though the standards of the public schools they are trying to open have fallen short.

Now, that’s the same graduate that employers have on hand. They want to pay more for less, which makes it difficult for employers to run efficient companies.

They learned by observation that work doesn’t require a person to add any value to the organization, but money should spill over. It’s next to impossible to convince employees with this mindset that they can take home a “normal” salary.

Now, this is very unpleasant for all decent and honest employers, who by the way make up the majority. Human resources are costly and employers would rather stay away from employees with such flawed work ethic.

Rare breeds have great value in the competition for employment.

Prospective employees who can tell their employers early on that they have the right work ethic are the ones that employers will quickly sweep into their organization. They are rare and thus a valuable breed.

The easiest way to show employers that you have the right work ethic is to demonstrate that you put sharp thought into your job search efforts.

A hastily crafted resume and poor job purpose statement won’t get you a second glance. The most important sign is the apparent lack of background research in many job seekers seeking employment in Kenya.

Candidates take the time to conduct a thorough background check on the organization they are applying for a job with, they demonstrate a good ability to communicate their skills and abilities to the company, they show that they know exactly what their skills and value will add to the organization’s It is job seekers who choose to take the road less traveled to find work in Kenya.

Such candidates are worth far more in the eyes of employers than any first, second or third class degree. Showing that you know employment means bringing value to the organization will do wonders for you in the Kenyan employment environment.
