The Face of Jesus

Has anyone seen the face of Jesus? I’ve been intrigued recently by the History Channel reporting on the number of studies at various universities, archaeological studies, and various computer programs attempting to recreate the face of Jesus. It looks like the “Shroud of Turin” is the latest subject to recreate the face of Jesus.

We have paintings and various icons from different regions of the world. However, so far we do not know the true face of Jesus. A recent CBC documentary on the Holy Mountain is a reflection based on this article. Although we don’t have pictures of Jesus, we do have plenty of depictions. This is the image one can imagine onto the canvas. Over the centuries, many famous artists have put their brushes on canvas to depict their personal feelings and imaginations of what Jesus looked like.

We have the ancient stature of many famous Roman and Greek philosophers. But no real picture of Jesus. So, maybe there might be a lesson or some reason to wonder why. I have my own thoughts on this wonderful topic, and you don’t have to agree with me. However, after the tragedy of losing my wife of thirty-two (32) years to stage four lung adenocarcinoma, I experienced firsthand what it is to face death and possibly beyond.

After binge watching a History Channel show about being interested in the face of Jesus, I had an idea. Perhaps it was a plan from the beginning that Jesus’ face could never be recreated. They must have tried to transfer facial images from the Shroud of Turin. They are very supportive of their efforts, but is the end result a picture of Jesus? not at all. Most people think it may be an image of Jesus.

My thoughts, no one has to accept that they come from an old man, I can only speak about my thoughts and feelings on the subject. So, here’s what I think. I think the face of Jesus is all around us, we just don’t realize it. Just look into the eyes of anyone who has a relationship with God. There is a sense of peace and bliss to look into their eyes. Look into the peaceful eyes of the dying. Their eyes appear to be the eyes of Jesus. Anyone who has experienced tragedy in their life, whether for medical, financial, emotional, or other reasons, these individuals have faced challenges in their lives.

Just take a few minutes in your life, when you are alone, look in the mirror and ask yourself, am I happy with myself? This is not to drive you to church and change your ways. You are the judge of your own actions. If you are proud of yourself, you will see a pair of very flattering eyes smiling at you in the mirror. All my years I’ve always seen people with a certain look of peace on their faces as they left church services. I watched with interest the eyes of protesters around the world. TVs, cameras and cell phone cameras have a way of being right in the middle of an event and depicting the eyes of a protester.

In those millions of eyes, I have yet to see anything but excitement, anger and fear. Why? I don’t know the answer, but I do have a choice of what to look for. I prefer to look into the eyes of those who communicate with a higher being in some way. I really don’t care if you’re Roman Catholic, Buddhist, Presbyterian, Muslim, or some other religion. I only know that happiness is reflected in this world through your eyes.
