Caution – Mind at Work – Do We Get a Second Chance?

Watching the weatherman on the evening news last night, I cringe every time I hear the host say “want” and “want.” How has the art of speaking and writing changed? Young people texting today use language that resembles alien sketches from another galaxy. I recently ventured into a McDonald’s restaurant and had to ask the young man serving me to repeat each question at least four times before I could understand what she was saying to me. She was talking so fast, without any clarity or modulation in her voice, that I thought I’d been hit in the head with a high-speed broadband internet modem. Is this a sign of where the future is taking us?

So what can I do to speed up the way I speak, think, write and everything else? I mean, is this a case of “if you can’t beat ’em, then you join ’em”? Sadly, I realized that our planet has been invaded by aliens who used to speak slower, write better, and have no problems with time and space. The generation gap seemed smaller back then. But at this rate, I think we’re doing more damage to our own brains. More and more people I know complain of poor memory, dyslexia when writing, and a general feeling of lack of motivation in life. What caused this, is there a remedy, or… is it too late?

I’m not sure when this metamorphosis into an altered state began, but Dr. Norman Doidge, a psychiatrist at the Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research at Columbia University in New York and at the Graduate School of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto, did a lot for me It makes sense. People who speak and write more slowly and clearly show better motor skills and enjoy healthier physical activity, he said. He recently gave an interview on ABC1 (1/5/09) about “neuroplasticity” as a major factor affecting brain activity. What is it, I hear you ask? Or should I say, “Whotsit orl abaut, man?” Yes, I understand you for the first time! The premise of neuroplasticity is that if you stop using certain brain functions, you eventually lose them.

A person is used to talking to many people on a daily basis and finds each day to be challenging, so it feels like they are mentally “on guard” for most of their waking hours as a result. Their minds were sharper and their memories more accurate. The same person becomes another person once they retire and their lifestyle becomes more inactive. I can vouch for this because members of my own family have retired from more active lives and now seem to lead a seemingly aimless life without any meaningful mental stimulation. For me, sitting and watching TV for hours on end doing nothing is not the most exciting way to live.

Things they were able to do before, such as remembering things clearly, solving problems on the fly, remembering times and dates, staying motivated and experiencing higher levels of personal power, are lost after they retire because these abilities are no longer used. In short, if you don’t use it, you lose it! I worry that our modern lifestyle choices are putting the entire human race down this path, and unless we act on it now, our nursing homes will soon be filled with people who can’t even remember their grandchildren’s names.

Dr. Doidge also notes that to stimulate your brain and maintain a healthy level of function, you need to do new things and allow your brain to learn more on a regular basis (note: mind at work!). For example, learning a new language actually improves your mental activity by promoting brain cell growth and developing more connections. I don’t think anyone wants to be in a nursing home with their head on one side, feeling saliva dripping from the corner of their mouth, and not having the mental strength to wipe it away. That’s a sad picture, and one we’re drawn to. Just yesterday, I heard Olivia Newton-John from the famous classic film “Grease” talk about improving your mental awareness in a radio interview. She said too many people now seem to be affected by some kind of brain disease or dysfunction. She was touting the benefits of using the new Nintendo brain exerciser, and I figured I’d buy one myself. In fact, your brain is currently the most complex computer on the planet. So how do we keep it from degenerating and dysfunctional?

In his book The Self-Changing Brain, Dr. Doidge further explains that the human brain is highly plastic and therefore flexible enough that it has the ability to self-change, regenerate and adapt to various situations and experiences, even to elderly. As we discover more and more of what the brain is truly capable of doing, our belief systems about the brain must change. “The brain is not as ‘hard-wired’ as a machine or a computer as people think it is,” said Dr. Doidge. Expanding our understanding of the healthy brain and human resilience.”

Where do we go from here?
