Chewing the Fat – Top 10 Most Offensive Stereotypes

Dealing with image issues is hard enough when you’re a woman. There are spray-painted models, unrealistic performances and judgments everywhere. As I’ve grown up, I’ve realized the phoniness of these things and stopped comparing myself to models and actors.

However, as a plus-size woman, I’m often annoyed by the stereotypes and assumptions about us. Time for us big girls to speak up.

I was very disappointed recently when a well-known writers convention decided not to bring back a staff member for this year’s event because of her size, and they were whistled (and rightfully so). Weight or size discrimination happens every day, and I have encountered it.

There are many reasons why a person might be overweight – which is why stereotypes are so strong. But I think it’s safe to say that generalizing about any group of people is ignorant, wrong, and dangerous. Overweight women (and men) are no exception.

Here are the top 10 most offensive stereotypes I’ve ever experienced, and I think it’s time to call them out.

  1. We are always eating.

Think TV sitcoms, with the token fat guy always pushing his face and having no self-control. It’s partly a lazy way of writing to be likable. But it’s a common stereotype, and it’s annoying. Is it really that funny? Hasn’t this joke been dug deep enough?

  1. We are all lazy.

I’m busy from the moment my feet hit the floor in the morning until my head hits the pillow at night. I know many other overweight people as well. Just because we don’t hang out at the gym as a hobby doesn’t mean we sit on our butts eating candy all day.

  1. We all get sick because of our weight.

I realized that being overweight increases the risk of several diseases and problems (heart disease, diabetes, etc.). But it’s not a guarantee, and you can’t assume that someone who is overweight is experiencing these challenges.

I remember when I was pregnant with my son for the first time. I was 37 years old and overweight. Don’t think I didn’t notice the upper and lower eyeball assessments I got. I want to tell them “yes! I know I’m fat and you guys think I’m old enough to have kids like Methuselah, but I’m not stupid and I’ll take care of myself and my kids!”

I am not advising on this in any way, shape or form. Go to your doctor. But yes, I have a healthy pregnancy and baby. I eat healthy and my prenatal care is great. But I can do it without all judgment.

  1. We envy thin people.

Not long ago, someone at work (who happened to be skinny) emphasized an important point in a conversation with me by going on about how much she thought she had gained weight. It was obvious that I was much heavier than her and she was only talking to me at the time. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard something like this.

When a visibly thin person says this to a visibly heavier person, the first thing that comes to mind is that they want you to say “Oh, I wish I were as thin as you! You’re not fat at all!” A fish of praise.

Here’s the thing, I don’t care who’s skinnier than me. I am not comparing with them! If they need a fat guy to envy them to feel good about themselves, then I feel bad for them.

  1. We all have low self-esteem and feel terrible about ourselves.

I’m currently almost at my peak weight (and I’m aging) and I feel better about myself than ever.

I realize that what people find attractive can vary widely. The only person I really cared about being attracted to was my husband, and he didn’t complain.

I once had a health coordinator where I worked condescendingly told me “you’re worth it”, as if she thought that just because I was fat, I didn’t think I should pursue anything I thought was good for me.

  1. We don’t know we are fat.

In my entire life, more than one person has felt the need to point out to me that I am fat. We don’t need people to make us aware of being overweight. We are perfectly capable of knowing this for ourselves, trust me – we do.

  1. We ourselves don’t know how to lose weight.

We don’t need to accept unsolicited advice as if we don’t know that in order to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you consume. We’re not completely powerless in this regard, and for many of us, if we want to lose weight hard enough, we’ll do it!

Of course, there are educated professionals who are highly skilled and experienced in helping people achieve their goals. Nutritionists, personal trainers, coaches, etc., I’m not saying they’re not important or valuable. I mean, we don’t need “stinky eyes” if we happen to indulge in seconds or eat dessert.

I once had a co-worker show me her sandwich with lots of veggies on it and say “oh look at that. Don’t all those veggies look pretty and colorful and tasty?” when she said that to me It was as if I was a child and it was like she was introducing me to the idea of eating vegetables. Because of other things she’s said to me in the past, I’m sure of her patronizing agenda.

  1. We are all happy slobs.

Is it really that funny that so many dumb, bumbling TV, book and movie characters are chubby? Do they often need to be portrayed as simple-minded, lovable goofs? We’re not all stupid and uneducated, but lovable idiots. Think of the pudgy kid in kids adventure movies who always needs to be rescued, or the cartoon mouse who is always behind the big guy…you get the idea.

Some of us are actually educated and successful professionals. We are goal oriented and can help us a lot in developing a good career.

  1. This has to do with obesity and hygiene.

We are just as likely to present ourselves well by grooming or dressing professionally. I once had a family member tell me they thought someone looked unhygienic (who happened to be overweight) and he said “well, I know what fat smells like…” My eyes nearly rolled out. I’ve had too many skinny people around me, so it’s a no-brainer!

We know this is a common stereotype, otherwise we wouldn’t see lazy characters portrayed as fat in TV shows or movies. You’ve seen it – stains on their shirts, rumpled clothing, general unkemptness. This doesn’t even have to be said, but not every overweight person is unhygienic (shout out…)

  1. It’s someone else’s business, or discrimination should be tolerated.

My message to the creators of these stereotypes is – if it doesn’t affect you, don’t judge. Someone’s weight or what size they wear has nothing to do with anyone else. Transferring your own inferiority complex onto fat people in order to make yourself feel better is not OK.

Stereotypes and assumptions are destructive. This is where discrimination is born. This is how we miss out on promotions and opportunities. It is wrong to discriminate against someone for any reason, and body size is no exception.

It’s there, and the challenge is real. It’s time for us to speak up.
