Interesting Facts About Echidnas – Characteristics, Diet, Habitat, Breeding, and Predators

long beak and short beaked echidna An animal whose nose has been modified to form an elongated beak-like organ. They are toothless, have a long, protruding tongue, and in addition to normal hair, they have many specialized hairs on their sides and back that are groomed to form sharp spines. Long-beaked species have an overall length of 45 to 90 cm (18 to 35 in) and a weight of 5 to 10 kg (11 to 22 lb), which is several centimeters longer (11 to 22 lb) than the short-beaked species, which are only 30 to 45 lb 18 inches), weighing 2.5 to 8 kg (6 to 18 lbs). In short-beaked echidnas, males are larger than females. Of both species, only the males retain the bony spurs on the ankles of each hind leg.

distribute

The status of the long-beaked echidna is questionable because little research has been done on its range. The short-beaked echidna is found in mainland Australia and Tasmania, and its status can be regarded as common. In Papua New Guinea, it is still considered common in lowland areas, although both species are predated by humans for food.

physical properties

Unlike the platypus, the echidna’s ears and eyes are not in the same recess; the ear opening (with barely visible outer ear) is behind the eye. Both the nose and the protruding tongue are used for feeding.

What do echidnas eat?

Short-beaked echidnas eat primarily termites and ants, but also insect larvae.

It acquires ants and termites by digging up the mounds, corridors and nests of these insects with the large claws on its front feet. The echidna then uses its sticky tongue to pick up the ants or termites.

It can stick its elongated snout into tight spaces and stick its tongue into small cavities to approach these insects.

general term Tongue Actually means “quick tongue”. Long-beaked echidnas feed primarily on worms. It uses spines located in the grooves of its tongue to draw the worms into its mouth. In both species, mucus secretions make the tongue sticky, and in the absence of teeth, food material is ground up between the base of the tongue and spines at the back of the palate.

Are they nocturnal animals?

Not much is known about echidna activity in New Guinea, but in Australia, echidnas can be active at any time of day, although they appear to be less active and will bury themselves in soil or rocks during extreme heat or cold or shelter under vegetation.

They also seem to be less active in rainy weather. Like the platypus, they cannot tolerate high temperatures and will die of heat stress if they do not have shade.

The burrowing abilities of short-beaked echidnas are legendary, with the ability to burrow vertically down into the ground and disappear in less than a minute.

echidna body temperature

Echidnas are endotherms, and like the platypus, they can regulate their body temperature well above the ambient temperature by boosting their metabolism and using insulating fur and fat.

In all three monotremes, the temperature maintained is lower than that of many other mammalian species, but is usually kept within a few degrees of D. Parera’s 32°C (90°F) when the animals are active.

It is now known that short-beaked echidnas sometimes hibernate for two to three weeks during the winter in the Australian Alps, during which time the body temperature of the individual can drop to 4 to 9°C (39 to 48°F).

breeding season

  • Little is known about the long-beaked echidna’s reproductive cycle. In short-beaked species, a brood pouch develops during the breeding season, in which an egg is laid.

  • After about 10 days of incubation, the pups hatch and suck milk from the milk lump in the pouch, and pup stimulation stimulates milk flow.

  • The lactation period lasts for up to six months, but once the pup begins to grow spines (about nine weeks after hatching), it is left in the burrow for the mother to return to feed it.

  • As with the platypus, the breeding season is extended, with mating usually occurring in July and August.

  • The length of the gestation period before a female lays her eggs is unknown, but it is thought to be about three weeks.

  • As with platypus females, not all adult females in the short-beaked echidna population reproduce each year, but the reasons for this are unclear.

How long can echidnas live? – average lifespan

Both species of echidnas are long-lived. A short-beaked echidna in the Philadelphia Zoo lived 49 years, and one apparent individual in the wild has been found to be at least 16 years old.

A long-beaked echidna survived between 31 and 36 years at the Berlin Zoo, through two world wars, but nothing is known about the species’ longevity in the wild.

wild predator

Wild dogs have been known to prey on echidnas, despite their burrowing abilities and their spine bank. Foxes, feral cats, and monitor lizards take young from burrows during lactation, but perhaps the biggest mortality factor is cars.

The role of parasites or diseases in mortality is largely unknown. Echidnas are easy to keep in captivity, but rarely reproduce successfully in captivity.
