Old English War Poetry

World War I horribly wasted some 9 million young lives. With this loss comes grief and an inability to simply understand, why? Two young poets of the time, Rupert Brooks and Wilfred Owen, fell victim to the war, but before they died they left a lasting legacy of what came before them with their pens. the will. This article briefly describes how two gifted writers from different worlds ended up meeting the same fate.

On November 11, 1918, in Shrewsbury, England, the bells were rung to celebrate the armistice and the end of the First World War, and happiness rained down the county until the knock and the telegram came, and the faces of Mr. and Mrs. Owen Their smiles sank as they read how their poet son, Wilfred Owen, was killed in the battle of the Sambre Canal. But in April 1915, when another famous war poet, Rupert Brooke, was killed, Wilfred hadn’t even joined the army, and before the massacre of “The Great Folly” came upon them both, they The poetic and living worlds are starkly different into a world of needless death and carnage.

Born in Rugby, England, Rupert had a boyish good looks and charm that prompted the Irish poet William Butler Yeats to describe him as “the most handsome man in England”. After being awarded a scholarship to King’s College, Cambridge, Rupert became an active member of many theater groups and Writers’ Clubs, and soon became a figure admired by many, some for his talent and some for his good looks, Virginia Wolfe Having boasted that he once went skinny-dipping with Rupert and his friends is usually quite popular. He was, however, a man who was confused about his sexuality, and began traveling through parts of the United States and Canada, writing a travel diary for The Westminster Gazette. On his way back to England by the long route, he settled on the island of Tahiti, where he had a daughter by a native woman with whom he is said to have had the most complete emotional relationship, but his wonderful Desire still keeps him going. On his return to England he became romantically involved with many of the leading actresses of the day, and when his work turned to war poetry he caught the attention of Winston Churchill, who commissioned him into the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Rupert, 27, joined the Royal Navy’s Antwerp Expedition in October 1914 and then sailed with the British Mediterranean Expeditionary Force on 28 February 1915, but was bitten by a mosquito which resulted in a septic infection which killed him April 1915 23rd. His body was interred on the Greek island of Skyros at a site chosen by his friend and author William Denis Browne, who later wrote of Brooke’s death.

It was in September of that same year, 1915, that Wilfred Owen, then a teacher in Continental Europe, visited the war wounded in a local military hospital and was deeply moved by their stories and conditions. He himself was only 22 when he decided to join the British Army, and in a statement in September 1915 he said: “I came out to help these boys, directly by leading them as well as officers; indirectly , by looking at their pain so I could talk about them like an apologist. I made the first one.” In March 1917, Owen was sent home wounded, but returned to the front in August 1918, Killed shortly after. Both Rupert Brooke and Wilfred Owen fought in World War I for their own reasons, yet their writing and poetry survive to this day, attesting to their shared fear of what was then considered a modern war .

I can’t pretend to be able to write something as emotionally charged as their individual work, so I suggest you hit the internet and read the following two poems as the true conclusion to this essay.

Rupert Brooks – Soldier.

Wilfred Owen – Dulce et Decorum est (Old Lies).

Precautions:

In Poets’ Corner at Westminster Abbey stands a slate memorial to 16 First World War poets, including Rupert Brooks and Wilfred Owen, whose works are also inscribed as follows:

“My subject matter is war, and the regret of war, poetry is in regret.”
