The sun was up in Ozark, Alabama, and soldiers were everywhere, camping out on pastures, on the side of the road, eating breakfast, marching, exercising, brushing horses, etc. Some soldiers didn’t even have uniforms, the Confederates.

As his wagon passed, old Josh waved his hands with an old tin can and shouted at a captain in gray uniform who was shaving by his tent:

“Yawl gonter los, the bee is a free man’s nest!” Then he said a few times “Hoaraw!…” or something like that.

He sat on the back seat of his carriage with two bags of salt on his knees (his son Tyrone galloped down the dirt lane); and they went to town and bought it for their master, Mr. Charles Hightoll, He’s a retired country gentleman who’s been living in these parts of Alabama ever since – or so it seemed – Alabama was Alabama. The plantation was only ten miles down the road.

“Pappy, yawl trying to get us in a bunch of trouble, jes yu tote dat salt and nummine cusses to the gray sojers. Yos hear me?”

Josh Sr. told his 33-year-old son,

“Yus han me dat whup, I sho the gry who I is, a’d you too; get them out of de south for god. Hops blue twist them and the kids.”

“Stop that cussen pappy, you’re gonna get us in trouble talking like that. You’re the only person I’ve ever seen talking like her!” Tyrone said.

“Fiddlesticks, I’m going to hit you nigga, what are you doing, the grays help you! You don’t want to say what I’m going to say. Mr. Haight, he’s sitting in his house watching all the time we’ people do His pot.”

“Yes,” said Tyrone, “we’ll be back in about an hour, if we succeed before you let us get grayed out! . . . You go on.”

“De Lawd giv de land to whit fok on’y?” Old Josh said.

“I think,” said Tyrone, adding, “to tell you more, and let me guess—you’re an old man.”

“Daddy owns your body and one day wants your soul… You’re as blind as Batman; he set me free and I’m never going to work on a plantation for the rest of my life.”

—they stopped at the plantation now; old Josh limped into the rear area behind the barn where there were cabins, where he slept, like a row of sheds. He waved his cane in the air, shaking it, and yelled at the men in gray (Confederates) about ten miles away, to the effect: ‘…fiddlesticks…; Concerned as if in his own world, and then he turned to see how his son was doing, and he led the horses into the barn and dismantled the wagon, and Josh, whispered, “This is America, and this is the great freedom place……”
