Giving 10 Percent – The Importance of Tithing
One of the most controversial issues in the Bible, if not the most controversial, is money. I have heard and read many times that money is mentioned in the bible more than heaven, hell and love combined. I’ve seen some sites mention hawking money over 2,000 times, others 800. Still others claim 125 times in the King James version. In any case, there is no fixed number. But money and dependence on God are very important issues for Christians.
So what is the tithe? Is it relevant today? Is it only for the Israelites? Do Christians Need to Pay?
Tithes are defined as one-tenth of a contribution. Therefore, to truly tithe, a person must give up 10 percent of his or her income. Any amount over 10% is called an offering in biblical terms. Anything below 10% is not a tenth. It may be a donation, but it is definitely not a tithe!
God promises to bless those who tithe and curses those who rob him of his due tithes and offerings. Deuteronomy, Kings 2, and Malachi are good books in the Bible to see the blessings and curses that happened to the Israelites.
One of the arguments I’ve heard against tithing is that it’s part of the law. This is the instruction of the Old Testament, which is erased under the New Testament. But if you want to be picky about that, the concept of tithes predates law. In the book of Genesis, Abraham (still called Abram) dedicated ten percent of the booty Abraham had just won to High Priest Melchizedek. Both Abraham and Melchizedek acknowledge that God blessed Abraham with victories and spoils. So the tithing predates the law by about hundreds of years.
Do Christians Need to Tithe? No, this is not a condition for the creation of heaven. No one can buy his way into heaven. There is no legal requirement to tithe.
Should Christians Tithe? Absolutely! This is how Christians show that they trust God to take care of them. Let’s assume money is a very important issue for God (based on how many times it is mentioned throughout the Bible). Obviously, money is an important issue for everyone. So who do we acknowledge as Christians as the source of our money and overall welfare? When we choose to put a few dollars in our offering plate during church services, we are demonstrating that we are Source. We’ve earned this income and we’re going to stick with it.
But when we truly tithe, we are acknowledging God as our ultimate source. After all ten percent is a large part of our income that can be given away. But when we trust God, He blesses us with unexpected income and reduced expenses. When the new covenant was established, he didn’t stop blessing people. God’s mathematics is infinitely better than ours!
