What Does Handicapping Mean in Horse Racing?

Handicap is one of the basic elements of horse racing. If you want to bet on a horse for any reason other than liking the horse’s name, jockey or the color of his clothes, you better know about handicap!

All horse racing falls into one of two categories – jumping or conditioning, with jumping far more than conditioning in most events.

A handicap race is a race in which each horse is assigned different weights based on ability, so in theory each horse has an equal chance of winning. The British Horseracing Board (BHB) has handicap judges who provide an official rating (the horse’s ‘mark’) for every horse in the UK eligible for a handicap. However, this could also mean that if you are betting on the horse with the highest (best) handicap, you are likely betting on the heaviest horse in the race, as each point on the scale is equal to one pound (lb) the weight of. This means, for example, that a horse rated 45 is 10 pounds less than a horse rated 55 in the same race, and a horse rated 119 is 4 pounds better than a horse rated 115 by a disabled person. A full give-and-take race would be one where all the horses cross the finish line at the same time, which we all know won’t happen – but it does make things as fair as possible.

When horses of different ages compete against each other in a race, there is also an “age weight” adjustment as the horses age to 3, 4 and 5 years old.

There are different levels of handicap. The competition is divided into A, B, C, D, E, F or G, where A is the highest level of handicap and G is the lowest level. The official mark of the horse will determine which level of competition he can enter.
