Eight-year-old Noah was living with his mother in a housing project in East Tampa when his absent father came to visit after a two-year absence. After an argument and being slapped by his mother, he left her to go to Swainsboro, Georgia with his father, who abandoned him on the side of the road about five months later. He is picked up on a deserted country road by a random Greyhound bus driver who tries to drive Noah back to his mother’s home in East Tampa, but she rejects Noah and slams the door in his face , not knowing what else to do, he wandered around for hours, ending up in Ybor City.

For six months, Noah lived on the rugged streets of this Cuban neighborhood in East Tampa, sleeping in trash cans, eating in trash cans behind restaurants and begging for money from strangers. A social worker found him one day and offered him a place in an orphanage, where Noah spent the next nine years of his life until he graduated high school and went to college. During college, he endured a painful breakup with a high school sweetheart and sought help from an aging retired psychiatrist who prescribed only mind-altering drugs.

He contemplates suicide, but accidentally shoots and nearly kills his high school girlfriend and her father. Sentenced to 15 years in prison, he was recruited as a dog on the prison dog unit to hunt down fugitives by shooting at the risk of his life. After several years of tracking down and capturing fugitives, he was paroled back to finish college, where he continued his education and graduated. He then earned a master’s and doctorate in psychology, spent years helping others find God in his own private practice, and was finally granted a full pardon by Florida’s Governor (Laughton Chiles) in 1993.

When Noah was eight, his father left him by a highway in Georgia. The child waited alone for the Greyhound bus driver to spot him. That brought him back to Florida, back home and to his mother. But Noah’s mom lives with a new boyfriend. Little boys are no longer welcome. Noah was left on the streets of Tampa to survive. Eventually picked up and sent to an orphanage, he never saw his mother or father again. An abandoned boy may grow up to be a bitter person. But Noah regularly exceeded expectations. At a time of the year when we are grateful for the good in life, Noah is also grateful for the bad in life. “God has been watching over me, protecting me, and providing me with opportunities that I never would have had had I stayed with my parents,” Noah said.

Today, he’s a psychologist in Carmel, helping patients overcome their disappointments. He is also a husband and father, providing unprecedented stability to his three children. For nine years, Noah has lived in an orphanage. There he learned to drive and play the trumpet. It was the first place he felt safe, he said. By the teens, the boys in the orphanage were leaving. Most join the military. Noah wants to go to college. The parents of two friends opened their homes to him and offered him the opportunity to finish high school. It was while living with one of his new family that he met the man who would become his mentor. Sherwin Broersma, pastor of a Dutch Reformed church in Tampa, became interested in an orphan who needed a father figure. “He became a very powerful role model and a guiding force in my life,” Noah said. “I still use a lot of the advice he gave me over the years to treat my patients.” After high school, Noah attended Florida State University, changing majors four times before choosing psychology. He found himself enjoying helping others with their problems. He is also working hard for himself. “I was washing pots and pans at Red Lobster during the summer. I’d stand in the back, scrub and tell myself, ‘I’m a good guy and God loves me.'”

Noah is a transcendent being, one of those rare kids who can take life’s worst blows and still thrive. We don’t fully understand why one child soars in the face of abuse and neglect while most of the kids around him plummet. But Noah had three positive blessings in a negative childhood. He lives in a well-run facility, and the staff there take an interest in him. He found a mentor. And, he developed a strong personal belief that gave him hope. “A milestone for me was being able to forgive my parents for doing the best they could,” he said. In his Carmel clinic, Dr. Kersey teaches principles common to those who overcome adversity. One is to commit to change. The other is to have faith in the process and to be patient and wait for the transition to happen. He also emphasized that anger and fear can serve as motivators for success. However, success did not erase the memory of Noah’s painful childhood. His biggest struggle, he says, is giving his kids the freedom to fail and not become overprotective because of his own experiences. One of these traumatic experiences prompted Dr. Kersey to complete his studies. As a young man, he visited a woman he knew in the hope that she would help her find a job. The woman who almost adopted Noah a few years ago rejected him coldly. “I left her house, stood in the driveway and said, ‘I’ll show her,'” he said. Years later, after he finished his Ph.D., he sent the woman a thank you letter. “The best revenge is being successful despite someone letting you down,” he said.
