The King James Bible and Bible Illiteracy in the United States
Between 1604 and 1611, 57 of Britain’s most educated men translated the Bible so that people could not only have a personal copy, but read and understand it easily. The king ordered new translations to be made to satisfy two religious sects—the bishops and the Puritans. Accordingly, the language of the King James Bible was translated into an undisputed translation to appease the religious minds of both denominations, while remaining faithful to the earliest known Hebrew and Greek sources at the time.
King James is also translated for easy and fluent reading. When read aloud, the words sound majestic and gorgeous. Today, 400 years later, in the United Kingdom, the United States and other English-speaking countries, these words sound very different from the pronunciation of English today.
Even after 400 years, many people still love this translation so much they think it’s the only Bible they should read. This is the thinking of the “King James Onlyists”, who believe the many wrong ideas about it and the idea that it is superior to all other translations. But until 1769, the KJV was printed many times because it contained many spelling and punctuation problems, even though it was the main Bible read by English speakers.
The KJV is one of the most popular English Bibles among most American Christians. Unfortunately, it fosters illiteracy due to its antiquated language. Just because so many people buy it, that doesn’t mean they’ll read it. It is surprising that Christians have not abandoned it due to the many unstable meanings in its words, expressions, and grammatical structures. Gail Riplinger, an advocate for the King James Version Onlyist movement, points out that the youngest a person can read and understand it is a fifth grader. (“Evangelical Outreach” website). If parents wanted to teach their kids to read the Bible in third or fourth grade, they wouldn’t be using the King James Bible. But many doubt Riplinger’s theory. Many called her a “liar” because hundreds of “incomprehensible” words, and many sentences in the KJV no longer exist. (“Evangelical Outreach,” “kjvterms”).
In general, Protestant and Evangelical Christians today do not read their Bibles because most churches have become “apostate,” meaning they have strayed from God’s Word in the Bible. This is a seriously evolving mental problem, especially over the past two decades. Most pastors and their congregations turn to the King James Version because it is recognized as the oldest Bible and indisputably because it is widely used. Researchers George Gallup and Jim Castelli put this question in perspective in a 2004 article on Christian Headlines: “Americans Revered the Bible —but by and large they don’t read it. And because they don’t read it, they’ve become a Bible-illiterate people.” (“The Scandal of Bible Illiteracy,” June 24, 2004).
Most churches use entertainment to attract “parishioners.” People would rather engage in some secular activity than learn the Gospel from the Bible contained in the New Testament, because to them the church is boring. So, these “churches” no longer welcome God. Church apostasy is an aspect of our stupid society. Fewer people read God’s Word in the Bible.
America’s growing biblical illiteracy problem is not just spiritual, but illiteracy itself. In fact it has been going up for a long time. Most graduated from high school, but the highest percentage of those with a college degree ranged from 35-48%. (Worldatlas website). For those with higher degrees, the most is 14-28% (Worldatlas). But since 1990, fewer kids are learning the way they used to, and more teens are dropping out of high school. College tuition has gone up so much that many people don’t even go. So, people know less; fewer people know how to read. How should they read KJV or any other bible?
Many people associated with the church are missionaries who spread the gospel of Christianity abroad. How are locals who don’t know English supposed to read a 400-year-old English-language Bible? They must be highly educated and fluent in English.
Although many people like the King James translation because it appreciates its old English form, I think it is one of the worst translations of the Bible. Christians should read recent translations such as ESV, NIV, ASV, or even the New King James Version. One of the best modern translations of the New Testament is “Good News for the Modern Man.” All of these are faithful translations. The KJV has long existed, and all who read it will ensure that it is printed forever.
