Alloy wheels can make a big difference in a car or motorcycle, with improved handling and good looks. Because of this, enthusiasts have been upgrading to larger wheels over the years, replacing the basic steel wheels and hubcaps to differentiate their vehicles and provide a smoother ride.

While they look great, there is a problem with the alloy wheels. Wheels from European manufacturers like Volvo and 2- and 3-piece wheels like BBS tend to be softer and more prone to damage. When they break—bent or bent, among other potential problems—do you need to replace them entirely?

They frack the wheel beyond safety standards and call it a repaired wheel. However, if you use someone without proper experience, you and your family’s safety could be compromised.

The repair process is simple. First, we accurately mounted the wheels on the vehicle simulator. With the right amount of heat, consistent hydraulic pressure, and light vibrations under pressure, the alloy wheel will move – without cracking – back to its original state. If there’s a crack that’s invisible to the naked eye (under chrome or paint), it’ll pop in an instant; our certified welders will then fill and repair the crack. When the wheel cools, it retains its original strength. Heat, consistent pressure and vibration are the keys to excellent wheel repair.

Detail Area When a wheel is delivered to Metro Wheels, it is either unloaded by the owner, shipped to Metro Atlanta, or picked up from one of our wholesale customers. We generate a work order for each individual wheel detailing customer information and any special instructions. Each wheel is assigned a unique work order number that is engraved on the inside of the rim so Metro can accurately track its history. This number also makes it easier to keep track of the wheel throughout the repair process.

Once identified, each wheel is thoroughly washed to remove all brake dust, which may be hiding additional scratches, gouges or cracks. Metro uses a pressure washer system with a diluted acid-based cleaning compound that will not damage the existing finish of the wheels.

This is especially important with a wheel washer, as brake dust removal is critical in determining the extent of damage to the wheels. But it must be done correctly, as polished or anodized wheels can be damaged if the wrong cleaning agent is used. For example, two-piece wheels with bright edges that aren’t chromed are often anodized, a chemical treatment that’s hard to see. If the wrong cleaner or acid is used on this surface, streaks will appear on the surface of the wheel; however, this anodizing can be stripped and any scratches polished.

After a thorough cleaning, the wheel is fully inspected by one of our expert technicians for radial and lateral runout.

Runout is vertical, and Metro measures wheel out-of-roundness using micrometers that measure to 1/1,000th of an inch. If the wheel has 5/1,000th of an inch runout, you can put a dial indicator on the wheel and spin the wheel. The distance the wheel moves up and down as it spins is 5/1,000th of an inch both high and low – or oscillating.

Runout, on the other hand, is the degree to which a damaged wheel wobbles from side to side. On some larger diameter wheels, a hard pothole hit or curb can bend the wheel, and if it gets hit hard enough, it can bend and twist the spokes. Most lateral runout can be corrected by applying pressure to the back of the wheel. But when the lateral runout cannot be corrected, the wheel is not repairable.

Lateral runout is the most difficult type of repair to accomplish. It also happens to be the most deceiving, because while a wheel may appear to have only minor rim damage, it can actually be quite severe and not easily visible to the naked eye unless the wheel is spinning. This is especially common on newer front wheel drive cars where most of the force is cantilevered to the rear.

The next inspection point is for alloy defects such as curb rash and cracks. Metro recommends removing the tire for this inspection, as most damage cannot be seen otherwise.

Cracks are especially important because they are the most common type of damage that renders a wheel irreparable. When the wheel is bent near the root of the spokes, fog marks in the paint finish are sometimes seen, indicating cracks. Because repairing a wheel isn’t always the best thing to do in a given situation, it’s important to check the wheel thoroughly.

Cracks are especially common on chrome-plated wheels, a process that tends to make the wheels more brittle than standard-finish wheels. Sometimes, if a chrome wheel is badly bent, the chrome must be removed as cracks may develop underneath the chrome. If a chrome wheel cracks, Metro will sand the chrome off and re-weld it.

Finally, we inspect for finish defects, looking for poor paint finishes or additional scuffs and scratches.

After a full inspection, all information is added to the wheel’s work order. Metro then confirms the cost of the job with the customer and accounts for other items that may be involved such as valve stem type, tire installation and any other details. Once approved by the client, the work begins.

Color and finish the way you want

Paint booth If the wheels need refinishing, first strip them with an acrylic medium similar to sand. This medium is superior to the more commonly used steel shot or metal oxides. While they remove the finish faster and less expensively, they also roughen the surface and rip off some of the metal. This is especially damaging when you want to preserve any original casting markings displayed by the manufacturer.

The wheels are placed in a sandblasting cabinet with recycled plastic beads to remove the finish without removing the metal. But we don’t do this in all cases, as old paint is always the best primer. We sometimes fill in existing finishes, prep the surface and cover with new paint.

The next step in the process is to straighten the wheels. This removes most of the damage as well as any side to side wiggling.

After straightening, our welders rebuild the outer lip and repair any scrapes or cracks. Metro uses the Tig welding process, matching the base alloy to the weld alloy. The welds are then sanded down or re-stitched to return the wheel to its original condition.

Metro typically restores wheels to 1-10/1,000 of an inch, and factory tolerances are typically 15/1,000 of an inch for runout. (By comparison, the human eye can detect about 25/1,000 of an inch.)

Once the wheel is genuine, it’s time to refinish, rework, or repolish the wheel. Metro uses a computerized color matching system to match factory paint finishes. If a color is not on file, our painters can match visually, or provide white, anthracite, or a custom finish to the owner’s specification.

While this warranty does not cover scratches or surface damage to previously serviced wheels due to the use of improper cleaning chemicals or customer error, it does cover unexplained discoloration, fading or peeling.

If the wheel is machined, place it on a lathe. Metro offers a wide range of CNC programs for most factory and many custom wheels. If we do not have stock, our programmers can write the programs needed to perform precise cuts.

After completion, each wheel undergoes a final quality check. Check for runout, and check the finish for dirt or dust in the paint, unevenness, or orange peel. If all is well, the wheel is ready for tire fitting or delivery.

Install repaired wheels
