Loving Our Bodies

I was working with a client this week whose daughter was 10 and was already showing signs of body image issues. 10 years old! This woman is an amazing mom who supports her daughter to be healthy and strong. But, somehow, the sweet little girl was getting the message that her body wasn’t “skinny enough.”

I recently read an article about a family who allowed their teenage daughter to have breast implants because she didn’t like the size of her breasts. The girl is only 16 years old! I’m not judging what the family has done – it’s more of a discussion of what it’s like to be young when these physical issues start creeping in.

I remember thinking my body was ugly when I was 13. 13 years old! I’ve spent years battling this voice…my body has never felt beautiful.

It wasn’t until I was widowed at 30, raising 2 young kids, and had braces on my teeth… I didn’t care anymore. During this time of my life, my body was indifferent! Kind of like “There it is!”

My plate is too full to criticize myself. Plus, I was so shocked and sad that I didn’t have the energy to criticize my body. I was too busy wondering if there was anything I could have done to prevent my husband’s death!

I lost a lot of weight during that time. Although, it’s not because I care about that. Food tasted like cardboard. Plus, it takes a lot of energy to eat and clean all the food off your braces.

Death, grief and shock (plus braces) is a great way to lose weight! ! ! ! ! ! I’m kidding here. Although, it’s true for me!

It’s been years since that horrible time…my life is totally different! Resilience is a wonderful thing! Although, the critical voice in me that says, “Your body is loose and ugly!” is also stretchy.

*So, how do we develop children to feel good and confident about their bodies?

* How do we as adults appreciate our bodies… no matter where we are?

*In a culture that expects women to look like slim waifs with big boobs, is there a way to feel good about yourself? In one culture, men are required to have a “6 pack” abs. Whatever the hell that means!

The tricky thing about all these body issues is that people don’t feel physically fit unless they love their bodies. A body cannot thrive on a toxic waste pile of negative thoughts! The body only thrives when it is fed with good things…like thoughts of appreciation, thoughts of love…gratitude!

So, I hope you start doing something! I hope you can speak with gratitude for your own body! Even if the voice of appreciation is a bit far-fetched for you… I want you to give it a try!

I will start with:

I thank you, my body, for healing so many things (cuts, scrapes, colds and flu, etc.) without me having to do anything!

I thank you, my body, for supporting me in increasing my strength. I get out and work out on feel good days…you have a great response to that!

I thank you, my body, for remembering how to build muscle. I’ve seen a difference in my muscles…and I’m able to lift and carry bags of weed without hurting my bladder!

I thank you, my body, for loving me so unconditionally…even though I’m spanking your ass, you’re trying to send me love!

I appreciate your patience with me… even though I hate you, when I think about how “not enough” you are…you patiently take care of me.

I thank you, my body, it continues to heal even when I tell you you are not doing enough!

I am so grateful that I can sit here and write to you instead of suffering in this moment!

I’m grateful that I’m getting more and more pain free…more flexible…more flexible and stronger!

I thank you, my body, for containing my soul… my spirit. Because, without this amazing container, I can’t experience this physical world… Overall, it’s a really amazing place!

Thank you body…you rule!
