Apologetics and a Seven Year Old

I had an interesting conversation with a Christian last night. He is a fairly new Christian; he accepted Christ into his life about two years ago.

But now he questions his faith, wonders about God, and feels alone. He asked me many questions, and I answered them truthfully without hesitation.

He asked how I was sure there was only one true God. My answers come from biblical history, prophecy, creation, personal experience, and the experiences of others.

He asked me why other people choose other religions. I told him about cultural differences, historical differences, political pressures, and of course the evil that lures us in our world.

He asked me what to do when he felt like God wasn’t there for him. I told him to pray, to listen, to talk to other believers, to read the Bible, and I told him what Jesus had to say about the issue.

It’s a long talk that covers issues that most adults are still grappling with. I was amazed at the level of interest, questioning and introspection he had, especially since he was only seven years old.

At the end of the night, he curled up and fell asleep, telling me his head was full.

Before he floated away, I lured one more fact into his mind: I promised him I would never lie to him. I told him that I would always tell him the absolute truth about God and Jesus. He nodded, smiled and kissed me good night.

I am exhausted. I never took a crash course in apologetics with my kids; I never thought the right time would arise.

Instead, many years ago, I decided to taper off the Christian element and slowly infuse the truth of Jesus Christ into their lives at an easy and age-appropriate pace. We talked about God a lot, taught them in Sunday school, tackled every problem and everyday obstacle from a Christian worldview, and prayed together constantly.

However, my son is still curious and questioning like an adult.

He feels bad for his friends who don’t accept Jesus.

He is plagued by messages from the world that have no God.

He is obsessed with images of constant evolution and human origins.

He questions his religious decisions and feels the sting of failure when he sins.

I believe these are normal occurrences given the world we live in and our current culture.

It bothers me, however, that seven-year-olds are so affected.I want him to have a carefree childhood

No sadness and sadness, but I know it’s not entirely possible.

I was trying to understand why I was so appalled by the experience of teaching apologetics to my son. When I woke up this morning, I realized that this bothers me because it crystallizes the importance of teaching children about God when they are young.

By age seven, my child’s worldview and belief in God may not be set in stone, but it certainly hardens quickly. He has definite views and curiosity about the subject, questions and curiosity about the “correctness” of his religion.

Waiting until the child is a bit older, more cognitively capable, or smarter, I believe this can be a fatal mistake.

Even in preschool, God is real, he created everything (including you) and the message that he loves you must permeate our children’s lives.

Sadly, these years were often overlooked by the church, which considered it “too early” to start this kind of education.

A friend of mine when my son was six declared that everything was God, including the trees, the air, and himself. This is what he learned in church. He firmly believed that this was absolutely true.

It would be an extraordinary achievement to now remove the seeds that his church, family and life planted firmly in the soil of his mind.

I found this disturbing and challenging at the same time.

How on earth do we, as a church body, change the mind of a six-year-old without taking issue with our blatant indoctrination? Or an instillation error? Jesus told us to tell others about him. He instructed his disciples to be “fishers of men.” But today, it is not so easy for us to dance the politically correct dance with our non-Christian friends, family and acquaintances.

Our society loves its individuality and acceptance of all cultures and beliefs. My son was offended by telling his friends he was wrong, maybe not me, but his family and church certainly didn’t approve.

So how do we approach this battle as it is a battlefield?

I think it’s through love. God tells us that we will be known for our love, not for our powers of persuasion or coercion (some would call our message that), but for our love.

Then, I told my son to just love his friends. I told him to enjoy being with his friends and to have fun together. I told him that if he takes the time to love his friend, God is a great God and he will get the job done.

I know I’m right, I know God is right. I know that Jesus Christ is the absolute truth for our world. I just pray my son will know this too.
