Mrs. Butters’ Secret Key Lime Pie Recipe
“A frozen key lime pie recipe?” asked Vern Butters. “Son, I’ll take this secret to my grave.”
The frozen key lime pie at Fern Butters is legendary. Every time President Harry S. Truman stopped by Islamorada on Upper Matt Kumkee Island on his way to his “Little White House” in Key West.More specifically, he
Stop at the Fern Inn for a frozen key lime pie from Fern Butters.
So did other people, commoners and dignitaries – Papa Hemingway, Cordell Hull, Douglas Fairbanks, Julia Child. And me.
I haven’t met the famous ones. Except Julia Child. I don’t know who she is. Youth is ignorant.
But I did eat Mrs. Butters’ frozen key lime pie.
I was not a kid when I asked her for the recipe. I have my grandmother’s recipe for compressed fruitcake. And my grandfather’s elderberry wine. And some I’ve collected from near and far. So I think her cookbook would be a great addition to my collection.
It’s not like this. I am the young pastor of her small church in Matecumbe. But I could have been Gabriel himself.
And never get that well-kept secret.
Many people have tried to copy her recipes without success. I saw that Julia Child had tried unsuccessfully to scam Fern Butters for a recipe. I heard she tried again to replicate the recipe, but was unsuccessful.
Of course, this could just be a legend. It’s believable. Everyone who’s tried her frozen key lime pie drools over this recipe.
Well, Fern is dead now. The Fern Inn has changed its name. Fern took the cookbook to his grave.
However, recently her daughter called me. After all these years, she said, she had been going through her mother’s letters and other things and trying to clean out an old dresser drawer full of old letters and notes.
She saw an envelope with my name on it. She wondered if I was the same missionary who served in the little church in Matt Combe.
This is a strange event. I moved to Wisconsin to serve a church for a few years. When I came back to South Florida, I was a university professor for 33 years. I retired from college and served a church in North Miami Beach for 13 years. I am retired again. Then responded to a desperate call to serve as a pastor in a retirement community. I happened to be where Fern Butters’ daughter could reach me.
The envelope she sent me has now turned yellow. Fern has been dead for about 40 years. I open the envelope. The note reads:
This is what you asked for. Use it wisely.
Now I’m wondering what to do with this recipe. Of course, I can post it directly. Or I could write a book about my days as a young pastor on Keith Conch (as the people call themselves there).i might even sell it [How long would that last!?]
But I decided to drop it. I wouldn’t even swear the recipient to secrecy. I just want to give it to people who love unusual and historical recipes. For example, I have a friend from North Carolina whose family has a recipe for pumpkin soup that has been passed down from the pioneer days.
Then there was my friend from Lady Island, Beaufort County, South Carolina. She claims her ancestors created Frogmore Stew.
An aunt in Western Maryland said she would make me a recipe for “pudding,” a meat product used in pancakes that is out of this world. I don’t know what the ingredients are, but I’d love to know.
