I was not a kid when I asked her for the recipe. I have my grandmother’s recipe for compressed fruitcake. And my grandfather’s elderberry wine. And some I’ve collected from near and far. So I think her cookbook would be a great addition to my collection.

It’s not like this. I am the young pastor of her small church in Matecumbe. But I could have been Gabriel himself.

And never get that well-kept secret.

Many people have tried to copy her recipes without success. I saw that Julia Child had tried unsuccessfully to scam Fern Butters for a recipe. I heard she tried again to replicate the recipe, but was unsuccessful.

But I decided to drop it. I wouldn’t even swear the recipient to secrecy. I just want to give it to people who love unusual and historical recipes. For example, I have a friend from North Carolina whose family has a recipe for pumpkin soup that has been passed down from the pioneer days.

Then there was my friend from Lady Island, Beaufort County, South Carolina. She claims her ancestors created Frogmore Stew.

An aunt in Western Maryland said she would make me a recipe for “pudding,” a meat product used in pancakes that is out of this world. I don’t know what the ingredients are, but I’d love to know.

Key Lime Pie Recipe

raw material

1 cup sweetened condensed milk

6 egg yolks [save whites]

½ cup lime juice [genuine key lime]

6 egg whites [I told you to save them!]

1 tablespoon cream of tartar

1 cup sugar

1 graham cracker pie crust [preferred-regular crust permissible]

½ pint secret recipe

Add the egg yolks to the condensed milk and beat for 8 minutes

Add the recipe and mix well

Add lime juice and mix well

folded into pie crust

Put in the refrigerator until set.Store unused portions in the refrigerator for up to a week [if it lasts that long!]

Pie group Beat 6 egg whites with cream of tartar for 5 minutes.

Add 1 cup sugar and beat until meringue peaks when whisk is removed from mixture.

Bake in a 350° oven and chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes or more for regular pies, or 1 hour for frozen key lime pies.

The secret ingredient. ½ pint soft vanilla ice cream.

Do not laugh. Adding this secret ingredient made many jealous cooks and head chefs sad, including, as I said, Julia Child. Reveal it, and you can demystify your own ability to produce “Harry Truman tested” frozen key lime pie.
