Did Cristiano Ronaldo Deserve To Be World Player Of The Year 2014?

FIFA recently awarded the 2014 Ballon d’Or (World Player of the Year) to Cristiano Ronaldo, proving that the honor is more about politics and personal cachet than performance on the pitch.

Although players from multiple countries are nominated and awarded, they always play for European clubs, while players active in other leagues such as South America and Mexico are usually overlooked. The best players are selected by players and managers based on preference rather than merit, which often produces undeserving winners. As a result, the award has lost recognition and become an object of entertainment and ridicule.

The Ballon d’Or was established in 1956 by a magazine called France Football to honor the history-makers of the sport. but it is not the truth.

La Liga

Between 1 January and 31 December 2014, Messi scored 35 goals in 36 games (11 right footed, 23 left footed, 1 header), while Cristiano Ronaldo scored 38 goals , but less versatile, only 4 balls with his head and unfavorable left foot.

Additionally, Messi created 97 chances, 24 more than any other player, and completed 164 dribbles, 63 more than nearest rival Athletic Bilbao’s Muniain (MAILOnline – Why Leon Neil Messi should win Ballon d’Or after record-breaking year at Barcelona; by Kieran Gill, 12 January 2015).

Europe

On 25 November, Messi conquered the continent by becoming the all-time top scorer in the UEFA Champions League in Nicosia, Cyprus. It was his 23rd European city, 16th European country and recorded his 24th goal in a different stadium (MAILOnline etc.)

2014 World Cup

In football’s biggest competition, Messi led Argentina to the final, was voted man of the match in 4 games (the most in any competition) and won the Golden Boot as the tournament’s man of the match.

He has the biggest impact on the game. His goals were all winners, helping Argentina reach the final. He was third with 4 goals and 1 assist, created the most chances, had the most successful dribbling runs, entered the box the most and produced the most through balls of any player.

Ronaldo, by contrast, was an insignificant factor, scoring only the final goal against Ghana and an assist against the USA.

history maker

Messi’s performance in 2014 is exactly what the Ballon d’Or is about, a performance that makes history. On March 16, he became Barcelona’s all-time top scorer (371). A week later, he became the top scorer (21 goals) in El Clasico (a match between Real Madrid and Barcelona) with a hat-trick.

He scored his 400th career goal against Granada on 27 September and broke a 59-year-old record on 22 November as La Liga’s all-time top scorer (253). Three days later, he scored a hat-trick to overtake Raúl as the top scorer in Champions League history (74).

Given all these achievements, one would think that of the three nominees, Messi is the most deserving. Instead, not only did he lose to Ronaldo, but he and fellow nominee Manuel Neuer also had a lower combined vote (31.48%) than Ronaldo (37.66%).

In 2013, Ronaldo won nothing, Franck Ribery won everything, but Ronaldo still beat him.

How to explain all this?

Politics Behind the Vote

FIFA’s standards require national team managers, captains and media officials to vote for the best player of the past twelve months.

Unsurprisingly, players vote for their teammates and countrymen. For example, in the 2014 race Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany) conceded all three places to Germans Manuel Neuer, Philipp Lahm and Thomas Muller.

Diego Godin (Atletico Madrid) voted for his former team-mates Diego Costa and Thibaut Courtois.

Vincent Kompany (Belgium) voted team-mates Thibaut Courtois and Eden Hazard the best player in the world, with Arjen Robben third.

Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich) exemplified the politics of it all, declaring, without giving a reason, that he regretted voting for Ronaldo over his team-mate Manuel Neuer. This “change of heart” can only be interpreted as coming from players in the locker room trying to save face with their teammates, not from voters with any real conviction.

The same criticism applies to coaches who only vote for national team players. For example, Argentina coach Gerardo Martino ceded all three places to his compatriots, Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria and Javier Mascherano, Belgium Manager Marc Wilmots voted Belgian Thibaut Coutus for third, with Didier Deschamps (France) ceding the final spot to France striker Benzema and the Netherlands Guus Hiddink awarded compatriot Arjen Robben the highest honor.

If the player is popular with the “boys” and can advertise a commercial product for the camera, they will get a lot of votes. Those defending Ronaldo as the best player point out that in the second half of 2014, he scored 32 goals. The problem is that nine of those goals were penalties, so his non-penalty goals are 23, the same as Messi without penalties. Ronaldo was nicknamed “Penaldo” for his proficiency in penalties and finishing.

In a World Cup year like 2014, what you do in the game defines your status. On the world’s biggest stage, Ronaldo was a nobody and his supporters used his injury as an excuse. That’s unfortunate if that’s true, but injuries are a misfortune, not a privilege, and he can only be judged on actual performances, not speculation on what he might have accomplished when fully healthy.

The Player of the Year award has lost its authenticity. But it doesn’t have to be. This is not a sex or school dance game. It should recognize live performance. Perhaps FIFA officials should act as referees themselves, give more consideration to non-European clubs, and use criteria such as grades and fair play to choose winners. It’s not a perfect system, but it’s preferable to the current system that’s deeply flawed and can’t be taken seriously.
