Mommas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Drive Tow Trucks
“I’ll only stay 2 nights” David assured his young wife. It was the first time he had to spend the night away from his new family alone. There was a good reason for it though, he tried to convince himself.
She said goodbye to him again as he drove to the plane. “Hope you’re not stage fright,” Maggie joked to him. “How many people are you going to stand in front of again?” He ignored the comment.
“Listen, I’ve called Mom, if you and the twins need anything, just call her?” he insisted. “I will, I will, you don’t have to worry about me. If I were you, I’d be more worried about giving your speech in front of all these people,” she giggled.
David has found a new position at an engineering consulting firm and is heading to a conference hundreds of miles away. To say he was worried about leaving his wife and children would be an understatement, but his mother lived close by and promised to help if anything happened.
Maggie hung up the phone and was still talking to herself and laughing as she dressed the twins. “We’ll have fun while Dad’s away,” she tells the 18-month-old girl. “Let’s go shopping.”
Shopping with twin babies always starts out fun, but by the third feed and fourth cry, Maggie is over. It’s too late anyway.
She loaded the minivan with shopping bags and the baby and hit the road. On that hot summer night, the sun shone in her eyes as she walked home around a corner on Route 8 outside the city.
When it does, she barely sees the blur. “How could such a small animal cause such a commotion?” she would later recall. As she turned the corner, a spotted fawn was standing in the road savoring a delicacy. At the last moment, she saw it lift its head, which caused her to veer into the other lane, then back into her driveway, and follow the embankment into the woods…
Carl’s day is drawing to a close. He started his shift at 6:00 am and it’s almost 7:30 pm. “Sometimes when I’m actually there, I’m treated like part of the problem solve problem,” he commented. It was a signal to his boss that it was time for the tow truck driver to take a break. Just then, the phone rang.
“I’m Highway Patrol Operator Tungstin.” The voice on the phone said, “We need you to deal with an incident on Highway 8.”
As Carl reluctantly climbed back into the trailer and headed that way, he began to wonder what else he could do for a living besides this thankless job…
Maggie still had a firm grip on the steering wheel when the minivan came to a sudden stop. Sitting on a wheel surrounded by trees, she turned quickly to check on the girls who were still comfortably seated in their car seats. She was relieved when she released the two babies and thoroughly inspected the injuries and found nothing wrong.
Call 911 first, then David, then Mom.
“911 What’s your emergency?” “I ran off the road and got stuck in the bushes next to the highway,” Maggie told them. “Okay ma’am, are you hurt?” “No, we’re all fine, but my van got stuck and I don’t know where the hell I am.” “We’ll find you, I just need a little more information… …”
Fire, EMS and law enforcement were on the scene when Carl arrived, but he didn’t see a wrecked car anywhere. “Oh, that’s great, it’s just under the embankment, and I’m going to stay here for a while,” he said to himself.
Carl climbed out of the trailer’s cab, approached the officer and asked where the vehicle was. As the officer pointed down the hill, he said; “See that tree down there and that little hump? It’s about 100 yards to the left of that little hump, and it goes over a few trees, so don’t know what’s down there damage.”
“Exactly the type of work I need to end this glorious day”, Carl thought as he got to work. Disgusted by the situation, he went on a snatch, winch and pull mission to get the damaged van to the side of the road. After an hour and a half of restoration work, all that was left was to load it into his wrecker and haul it back to the shop.
Just then, Maggie came up. “Hey, good job getting it out, it’s a lot easier to get in than to get out” she joked.
“Um, yes, thanks,” Carl managed. The last time he’d spent so much time restoring a wrecked vehicle, the underinsured owner had thrown a tantrum over the price, so he expected the same from Maggie.
“Hey,” she said, Carl was waiting. “Do you think you can give me and the girls a ride?”
“Give me a ride?” That’s not what Carl expected.
Carl thought, I’m not getting paid to do these extra things.
“Yes, I think so,” he said.
“I need some help getting those car seats out of the van, though,” Maggie suggested politely.
“Can’t help much, yes, I’m doing it,” Carl said to himself.
With the twins in the backseat, Maggie in the passenger seat, and their wreck on a hook, the parade can finally begin.
As they drove the 22 miles back to Maggie’s house, she started talking about her husband’s new job and the fact that he was out of town and that her mother-in-law couldn’t come and pick them up because she kept her eyes on the doctor that day and couldn’t see the drive. Maggie talks about where they moved from out of state 4 years ago and how much she loves the house they live in now.
As Carl listened and drove, he began to think about his wife and young son, and how terrible it would be if they were involved in an accident while he was away. Then, as he turned around, he caught a glimpse of two babies in the back seat. The lights of a passing car illuminated them for only a second, but they looked happy, content and safe. That’s when he realized he was doing more than just a job helping people in their most vulnerable times, he was helping families.
