Is Limited Thinking Sabotaging Your Business’s Success? 7 Tips To Turn Old Ideas In To New Ones

As we bid farewell to last year and look forward to the new year with hope and renewed vigor, there is no better time to reflect on the successes and failures of the past few years. In reflection, I ask you to dig deep into last year’s failures and really look for the root cause.

Many will blame a bad economy, lack of customers, diminishing opportunities, regulatory changes or financing, etc. The past few years have provided ample opportunity for all kinds of excuses and for all kinds of reasons. Some of you may not be too pleased, but let’s face it, despite a bad economy, bad housing market, financial crisis and many other “symptoms of the Great Recession” there are still businesses making money, expanding and being successful . If your business is not one of these, I ask you to think about it – “What role did you play in undermining the success of your business?”

This is not an easy question, and facing the truth of the answer is no better. Let’s face it, unless your business has been impacted by a natural disaster, war, or government-mandated shutdown, you probably had a number of options and options available to you to change, expand, and grow your business over the past year, Whether you realize it or not.

What “way” of doing business in the old economy has held you back from your success over the past few months? What old habits are limiting your expansion in changing and uncertain economic conditions? What limiting beliefs are making it difficult for you to move forward? As hard as it may be to admit, many of us have had ample opportunity to improve our business and economic conditions over the past few years. Unfortunately, a large number of small business owners have been so busy blaming the outside world and feeling sorry for themselves that they have missed many opportunities that could have moved their businesses forward and into the new economy.

Despite the challenges we are all facing right now, opportunities abound if you can let go of old habits and ways of thinking and find ways to capitalize on the current market chaos.

Here are some proven strategies to overcome bad habits and limited thinking and move your business forward despite any external market factors.

1. Look to others for insight and help. No matter how long you’ve been in business, how well your business has performed, or how much you currently “think you know,” surround yourself with other successful business owners and advisors. Challenging situations require high levels of thinking, curiosity, multiple perspectives and creativity. It’s easier and more effective to rely on a team of advisors and friends who can point out the many nuances you may have missed. Perspective is one of the biggest factors that can help you overcome obstacles, and unfortunately, no matter how smart you are, how much money you have, or how good you may be, you only have one perspective – your own. To see things from a different perspective, rely on your circle of influence to provide meaningful insights and perspectives about where you are, how things look, and where to go from here.

2. Adopt new ways of thinking and doing things. Most of us develop behavioral patterns and habits over time. These patterns, beliefs, and behaviors are often some of the biggest obstacles standing between where we are now and where we want to be in the future. Recognizing what got you here most likely won’t get you there and finding ways to change yourself. Take a new route to work, try a new food, read a book that goes against your beliefs, it doesn’t matter what you choose as long as it goes against what you would normally do. By challenging your habits and patterns and opening your heart to new experiences, you will ultimately open new paths to new opportunities. Find joy and joy in the nuances of new experiences, leaving the comforts of habit and the familiar behind.

3. Revisit past successes. Reflect on past successes and opportunities and look for hidden gems within those experiences. Often, as a business grows and stabilizes, we get lazy and start ignoring many of the things that brought us success in the first place. Think back and look for habits and behaviors you may have picked up in the early days of your business and be honest with yourself – are you still behaving the same way and doing similar things? Are you making as many sales calls as possible, looking for new opportunities, building new relationships? Or are you still trying to grab hold of what you have? It is critical that you be honest about what brought you here and what will ultimately get you through the next challenge.

4. Brainstorming. With the whole system in chaos right now, no one really knows which way is up, so take advantage of it. Everyone is affected, and most people and businesses now understand that change is happening rapidly everywhere. Take advantage of upheaval. If you’re hesitant to launch a new product or expand into a new market because existing customers might question your motives – go for it. Most critical eyes become more understanding as awareness sets in – in order to survive the next few years, you have to be able to adapt quickly, keep changing and try new things. Now is the perfect time to test a new product, open a branch, or explore new opportunities. I advise against throwing money around, but if an idea seems feasible after careful analysis and consideration, now is the time to test it out.

5. Face your demons. Are you afraid of what lies ahead? Not sure what to do? Not sure where you and your future lie? Now is the perfect time to reflect on who you are, where you are going and why you are going there. Open up and think about what you really plan to do with your life and how your business can provide you with that opportunity. Embrace the uncertainty you face every day and use it as an ever-changing opportunity for personal growth and development. Look for the things in your life that upset you the most, and you may find areas you want to focus on. Relationships, money, control, religion, politics, what area of your life is most confrontational or off-limits to you. Start there.

6. Design Roadmap. After the above thinking, reflection and analysis, formulate a plan. what have you learned What needs to be improved? Where do you want to go? What skills do you need to develop? /Who will help you succeed? Start planning for the who, what, when, where, how, and most importantly why. The bigger your WHY—the reason why you want to be successful—the easier everything else becomes. Start with the end in mind – identify your why, why are you doing what you do? Why did you go from here to there? Once you have made up your mind, create a plan that will take you from where you are now to the ideal future you envision.

7. Don’t go alone. Enlist the support of family, friends and business associates. Morale support is one of the greatest assets you can draw on in your desire to move forward. Communicate your goals and objectives to key people in your life and ask them to hold you accountable. Look to those around you for external motivation and, ultimately, to hold you accountable. Share your vision and aspirations with as many people as possible, and they will listen and seek their input and feedback. Create a plan based on your discussions and incorporate the feedback you receive into your business and everyday life.

At the end of the day, the biggest obstacles most of us will face in life are our own imposed limitations and beliefs. Use these 7 strategies to build momentum in your business and ultimately get you from here to where you want to go.
